TL;DR: In this paper, a portable communication device is used for route planning and navigation using a route request from a caller, and a route planner and navigation unit checks the latest traffic/road condition data, long term map database, knowledge database, Internet resources, if necessary, and then determines the best route for the driver to reach the destination.
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus and method for route planning and navigation using a portable communication device. A route planning and navigation unit receives a route request from a caller. The route planning and navigation unit checks the latest traffic/road condition data, long term map database, knowledge database, Internet resources, if necessary, and then determines the best route for the driver to reach the destination. The caller may also enter general destination information and be prompted to may a selection from the possible choices. The route planning and navigation unit may also provide exact location information to police officers and emergency personnel, if necessary. During the navigation phase, the caller may receive turn-by-turn navigation and reminders to change lanes in preparation for turns, etc. The route planning and navigation unit may monitor the caller's location, speed, and direction, and provide the caller with updates based on new traffic or road condition changes affecting the caller's route.

TL;DR: In this article, a navigation system provides multimedia annotations based upon the present location of the vehicle, which may include advertising or text or other information entered by the user and associated with a specific location or locations.
Abstract: A navigation system provides multimedia annotations based upon the present location of the vehicle. These presentations may comprise advertising or text or other information entered by the user and associated with a specific location or locations. The navigation system also provides a removable media reader which obtains additional information based upon which the navigation system operates. This additional information may include multimedia annotations which are location-based. The navigation system further includes a wireless communication system which interacts with and provides further location-based multimedia annotations.

TL;DR: In this article, a mobile unit which includes a microphone and a speaker is used to communicate between a user and a service location to provide navigation and information services, where a user may obtain navigation information and routing information by pressing a button on the mobile unit so as to initiate communication with the service location.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing navigation and information services A mobile unit which includes a microphone and a speaker is used to communicate between a user and a service location The service location includes a computer and data storage which includes data on geography, roads, road conditions, traffic and other data which may be of use to a user The mobile unit includes a receiver and position determination processing circuitry for location determination A user may obtain navigation information and routing information by pressing a button on the mobile unit so as to initiate communication with the service location The user then verbally requests the information which he needs by speaking into the microphone Using location data which is transmitted to the service location and the data in data storage, the computer compiles a response which is transmitted to the mobile unit and through the speaker for communication to the user The response is stored in the mobile unit and may be reviewed manually When the response includes voice based instructions, the voice based instructions may be incrementally broadcast to the user as required by the movement and position of the mobile unit so as to guide the user to a destination

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for displaying a map having a close known location and a destination and for providing navigation recommendations for traveling from the close-known location to the destination is presented.
Abstract: A system and method is provided for displaying a map having a close known location and a destination and for providing navigation recommendations for traveling from the close known location to the destination. A user may use a mobile device to submit a request for navigation instructions for navigating from a starting point to a destination. The request may be submitted to a web server, to the mobile device itself, or to another device that can provide navigation instructions. The web server/mobile device or other device determines a recommended route based on the starting point and the destination, and attempts to locate a close known location to the destination near the recommended route. Navigation instructions are provided to the user including directions from the close known location to the destination.

TL;DR: In this paper, a navigation system is provided for offering navigational assistance to a mobile user, which receives GPS position information signals which are processed to determine current position latitude and longitude coordinates and direction of travel.
Abstract: A navigation system is provided for offering navigational assistance to a mobile user. The navigation system receives GPS position information signals which are processed to determine current position latitude and longitude coordinates and direction of travel. A destination database includes a plurality of categorized destinations and corresponding destination position coordinates pertaining to the destinations. The destination database is stored on an interfacable memory card and contains menu categories and subcategories for classifying the destinations and additional text information pertaining to the destinations. User selectable menu controls enable the user to sequence through the menu of categories and destinations and select a desired destination. This is easily accomplished by rotating a rotary pushbutton to view category and destination selections and depressing the rotary pushbutton to select the selection shown. A processor compares the current position coordinates with the position coordinates of the selected destination and determines a distance and a straight-line direction from the current position to the selected destination. A display displays the distance and a direction pointing indicator for showing the direction from the current position to the selected destination. In one embodiment, the navigation system is integrated with an audio entertainment system and shares a common display and housing.
