TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid thermal control system that integrates a passive system (multi-layer insulation) with an active system (a mechanical cyrocooler) applied to cryogenic propellant storage is presented.
Abstract: This report presents the experimental results of a hybrid thermal control system, one that integrates a passive system (multi-layer insulation) with an active system (a mechanical cyrocooler) applied to cryogenic propellant storage. These experiments were performed on a 1.39 m diameter spherical propellant tank filled with LH2 while installed in an evacuated chamber. The tank heat transfer to the cryocooler was accomplished with a condenser installed in the ullage of the tank and mated to the second stage of the cooler, and by conduction, through copper leaves mated to the first stage of the cooler. The first hybrid system test was performed with both the condenser and the leaves, a configuration that had excess capacity to remove the heat entering the tank; the second test was performed with only the condenser, with a capacity closely matched to the tank heating rate. In both of these tests, the goal of zero boil-off was achieved.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of interfacial mass transfer on the ullage pressure response during venting was analytically determined, based on a conduction analysis applied to an infinitely planer (flat) liquid-vapor interface.
Abstract: An experimental investigation of venting cylindrical containers partially filled with initially saturated liquids under zero-gravity conditions was conducted in the NASA Lewis Research Center 5-second zero-gravity facility. The effect of interfacial mass transfer on the ullage pressure response during venting was analytically determined, based on a conduction analysis applied to an infinitely planer (flat) liquid-vapor interface. This pressure response was compared with both the experimental results and an adiabatic decompression computation.

TL;DR: In this paper, an active adsorbent pollutant reducing system includes a canister containing activated carbon, a pump and a series of valves connected to the canister and the pump.
Abstract: An active adsorbent pollutant reducing system includes a canister containing activated carbon, a pump and a series of valves connected to the canister and the pump. The valves and pump of the system are controlled so that vapor/air in the ullage of a gasoline storage tank is pumped to the canister/adsorbent material when tank pressure reaches a first level with vapor being adsorbed and air being discharged to atmosphere. When a second tank pressure level, lower than the first tank pressure level, is achieved, the valves are controlled to reconfigure the pump and canister so that continued pump operation pulls a vacuum on the canister resulting in adsorbed gasoline vapor being purged from the adsorbent material and returned to the storage tank. Tank pressure, HC content in the vapor flow and canister weight can be used for control of the system.

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical study of the influence of the ambient pressure of the fuel tank on the inerting effect of an aircraft fuel tank inerting system was carried out, and the mathematical model of ullage equilibrium oxygen concentration has been established using the differential time calculation method based on the mass conservation and ideal gas state equations.
Abstract: The numerical study of the influence of the ambient pressure of the fuel tank on the inerting effect of an aircraft fuel tank inerting system was carried out. The mathematical model of ullage equilibrium oxygen concentration has been established using the differential time calculation method based on the mass conservation and ideal gas state equations. The variations of ullage oxygen concentration and dissolved oxygen concentration in the fuel with time under different working conditions have been obtained. The results have shown that the as the ambient pressure of the fuel tank became lower, the speed of the decreasing of oxygen concentration of the fuel tank ullge and the dissolved oxygen concentration of the fuel was slower.
