Abstract: The cutaneous manifestations of mycosis fungoides have been successfully treated in nine patients for 16 to 28 months with oral methoxsalen and subsequent irradiation with longwave ultraviolet light. The efficacy of this therapy was confirmed in one patient, who showed complete clearing of generalized plaques after 1 month (12 treatments) except for a shielded control area which worsened during this period. Methoxsalen photochemotherapy may prove a valuable addition to therapies currently available for mycosis fungoides and may obviate some of the problems associated with conventional management of this disorder.

Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2; as a potential photosensitizer) has good photocurrent performance and chemical stability but often exhibits low utilization efficiency under ultraviolet (UV) region excitation. Herein, we devised a near-infrared light-to-UV light-mediated photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing platform for the sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on core–shell NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 upconversion microrods by coupling with target-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA). The upconversion microrods synthesized through the hydrothermal reaction could act as a photosensing platform to convert the near-infrared (near-IR) excitation into UV emission for generation of photoinduced electrons. The target analyte was determined on a functional magnetic bead by using the corresponding aptamers with a sandwich-type assay format. Abstract: Water-repellent surfaces have been prepared by exposing Si substrates with a hydroxylated surface oxide to fluoroalkyl silane (FAS) vapor. Since this chemical vapor surface modification (CVSM) is based on the chemical reaction between organosilane molecules and hydroxyl groups at the oxide surface, prior to CVSM, the substrate surface was completely hydroxylated by irradiating in air with a 172-nm ultraviolet light until the water contact angle of the surface became almost 0°. Under atmospheric pressure, the substrate was then exposed to vapor of an FAS precursor, that is, one of three types of FAS having different perfluoroalkyl chain lengths [CF3(CF2)nCH2CH2Si(OCH3)3, where n = 0, 5, or 7, referred to as FAS-3, FAS-13, and FAS-17, respectively]. Abstract: The bacteriophage lambda repressor, a protein that maintains the lysogenic state of a bacterium containing a lambda prophage, is cleaved when the lysogen is induced by mitomycin C or ultraviolet light. This cleavage does not occur when induction is prevented by mutational alteration either of the phage repressor or of the host recA gene product. Proteolytic cleavage may be the primary mechanism of repressor inactivation in this induction pathway, or it may follow a different event which causes the initial inactivation.

Abstract: Solar light is the primary source of UV radiation for all living systems. UV photons can mediate damage through two different mechanisms, either by direct absorption of UV via cellular chromophores, resulting in excited states formation and subsequent chemical reaction, or by phosensitization mechanisms, where the UV light is absorbed by endogenous (or exogenous) sensitizers that are excited and their further reactions lead to formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These highly reactive species can interact with cellular macromolecules such as DNA, proteins, fatty acids and saccharides causing oxidative damage. Direct and indirect injuries result in a number of harmful effects such as disrupted cell metabolism, morphological and ultrastructural changes, attack on the regulation pathways and, alterations in the differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis of skin cells. Processes like these can lead to erythema, sunburn, inflammation, immunosuppression, photoaging, gene mutation, and development of cutaneous malignancies. The endogenous and exogenous mechanisms of skin photoprotection are discussed.
