TL;DR: Oral administration of a photoactive drug, 8-methoxypsoralen (methoxsalen), followed by exposure to a high-intensity, longwave ultraviolet-light system resulted in complete clearing of generalized psoriasis in 21 patients.
Abstract: Oral administration of a photoactive drug, 8-methoxypsoralen (methoxsalen), followed by exposure to a high-intensity, longwave ultraviolet-light system resulted in complete clearing of generalized psoriasis in 21 patients. In 16 of these cases, a paired comparison showed methoxsalen followed by longwave ultraviolet light to be more effective than conventional ultraviolet light. 8-Methoxypsoralen followed by exposure to longwave ultraviolet light has previously been shown to inhibit epidermal DNA synthesis; this may be its mechanism of action in psoriasis, a disorder characterized by an accelerated cell cycle and rate of DNA synthesis. The term photochemotherapy is used to emphasize the point that the effect on epidermal proliferation and the therapeutic response require the interaction of light and drug. TL;DR: Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT), which predates the related cancer regimen, is proposed as a potential, low-cost approach to the treatment of locally occurring infection.
Abstract: Whereas the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer has recently shown rapid clinical acceptance, photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT)--which predates the related cancer regimen--is not widely appreciated. Like PDT, PACT utilizes photosensitizers and visible or ultraviolet light in order to give a phototoxic response, normally via oxidative damage. Currently, the major use of PACT is in the disinfection of blood products, particularly for viral inactivation, although more clinically-based protocols are being developed, e.g. in the treatment of oral infection. The technique has been shown to be effective in vitro against bacteria (including drug-resistant strains), yeasts, viruses and parasites. A wide range of photosensitizers, both natural and synthetic, is available with differing physicochemical make-up and light-absorption properties. PACT is proposed as a potential, low-cost approach to the treatment of locally occurring infection.

TL;DR: The sun's spectrum at the surface of the earth and the DNA action spectrum are used to calculate the carcinogenic effectiveness as a function of wavelength, and the basic biological and physical data are reasonably precise.
Abstract: DNA is taken as the target for skin cancer induced by ultraviolet light, and the known data on the sensitivity of DNA as a function of wavelength are summarized. The sun's spectrum at the surface of the earth and the DNA action spectrum are used to calculate the carcinogenic effectiveness as a function of wavelength. The most effective wavelengths at 30°N latitude are <305 nm, and a 1% change in atmospheric ozone results in a 2% change in the effective dose of ultraviolet light. Since both the basic biological and physical data are reasonably precise, the major requirement for a quantitative evaluation of the dose response relation for ultraviolet-induced skin cancer in man is better epidemiological data to compare with data from animal models.

TL;DR: Pollen tubes in the styles of the tomato and of other flowering plants can be observed by using the following technic.
Abstract: Pollen tubes in the styles of the tomato and of other flowering plants can be observed by using the following technic. Styles are fixed in formalin-acetic-80% alcohol (1:1:8) and cleared and softened in a strong (8 N) sodium hydroxide solution. Staining is accomplished in a 0.1% solution of water-soluble aniline blue dye dissolved in 0.1 N, K3PO4. The styles are smeared or are observed whole under a conventional or dissecting microscope by direct illumination with ultraviolet light of a wavelength of about 356 m°. Observations are made in a darkened room. Under these conditions callose fluoresces bright yellow-green and contrasts strongly with the bluish or grayish fluorescence of the stylar tissue. The pollen tubes are outlined by a callose lining and irregularly spaced callose plugs.

TL;DR: In this article, the photocatalytic activity for NO removal under an oxidative atmosphere has been studied over commercial TiO 2 and plasma-treated TiO2 powders, where NO 3 − was accumulated.
Abstract: The photocatalytic activity for NO removal under an oxidative atmosphere has been studied over commercial TiO 2 and plasma-treated TiO 2 powders. By the plasma treatment, the photocatalytic activity for NO removal appeared in the visible light region up to 600 nm without a decrease in the ultraviolet light activity. It was found that the NO was removed as nitrate (NO 3 − ) by photocatalytic oxidation over the TiO 2 powders, where NO 3 − was accumulated. No difference in the crystal structure, the crystallinity, and the specific surface area was observed between the raw TiO 2 and the plasma-treated TiO 2 photocatalysts. In electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements, a sharp signal at g =2.004, which was identified as the electrons trapped on oxygen vacancies, was detected only for plasma-treated TiO 2 under visible light irradiation. The saturated intensity of the ESR signal at g =2.004 was proportional to the removal percentage of nitrogen oxides, suggesting that the number of trapped electrons determined the activity for the photocatalytic oxidation of NO to NO 3 − . The appearance of the visible light activity in the plasma-treated TiO 2 photocatalyst was ascribed to the newly formed oxygen vacancy state between the valence and the conduction bands in the TiO 2 band structure.
