TL;DR: In this article, a broad range of research efforts have been devoted to enhancing the optical and electrical properties of TiO2, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity, including the introduction of intrinsic defects and foreign species into the TiO 2 lattice, morphology and crystal facet control, and the development of unique mesocrystal structures.
Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have garnered extensive scientific interest since 1972 and have been widely used in many areas, such as sustainable energy generation and the removal of environmental pollutants. Although TiO2 possesses the desired performance in utilizing ultraviolet light, its overall solar activity is still very limited because of a wide bandgap (3.0–3.2 eV) that cannot make use of visible light or light of longer wavelength. This phenomenon is a deficiency for TiO2 with respect to its potential application in visible light photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical devices, as well as photovoltaics and sensors. The high overpotential, sluggish migration, and rapid recombination of photogenerated electron/hole pairs are crucial factors that restrict further application of TiO2. Recently, a broad range of research efforts has been devoted to enhancing the optical and electrical properties of TiO2, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity. This review mainly outlines state-of-the-art modification strategies in optimizing the photocatalytic performance of TiO2, including the introduction of intrinsic defects and foreign species into the TiO2 lattice, morphology and crystal facet control, and the development of unique mesocrystal structures. The band structures, electronic properties, and chemical features of the modified TiO2 nanomaterials are clarified in detail along with details regarding their photocatalytic performance and various applications.

TL;DR: These materials, photopolymerized in vivo in direct contact with the tissues, appear to form an adherent hydrogel barrier that is highly effective in reducing postoperative adhesions in the models used.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to optimize the properties of a lubricious bioerodible hydrogel barrier for the prevention of postoperative adhesions. Water-soluble macromers based on block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(lactic acid) or poly(glycolic acid) with terminal acrylate groups were used, and these macromers were gelled in vivo by exposure to long wavelength ultraviolet light. The precursor was photopolymerized from buffered saline solution while in contact with the tissues. This resulted in the conformal coating of the tissue with an adherent hydrogel film, while forming a nonadhesive barrier at the free surface, on the treated wound site. The hydrogels were evaluated in two animal models of postsurgical adhesions, first in a rat cecum abrasion model and then in a rabbit uterine horn ischemia model. In the rat cecum model, six of seven animals treated with a hydrogel, with glycolide in the precursor as the comonomer, showed no adhesions; untreated animals and animals treated with precursor, but not gelled with light, showed consistent dense adhesions. In the rabbit uterine horn ischemia model, using hydrogels with lactide in the precursor as the comonomer, and PEG of molecular weight from 6,000 to 18,500 Da, adhesions were dramatically reduced, with occurrence in none of seven animals treated with a gel containing PEG 10,000. By contrast, the seven animals in the control group demonstrated a mean of 35% involvement of the horn length in dense, fibrous adhesions. These materials, photopolymerized in vivo in direct contact with the tissues, appear to form an adherent hydrogel barrier that is highly effective in reducing postoperative adhesions in the models used.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) [on SciFinder (R)]

TL;DR: The formation of virions carrying large superficial fusions illustrates a novel approach for production of high levels of foreign proteins in plants and demonstrates the potential of fusions between the green fluorescent protein and virus coat protein for the non-invasive study of virus multiplication and spread.
Abstract: Potato virus X (PVX) is a filamentous plant virus infecting many members of the family Solanaceae. A modified form of PVX, PVX.GFP-CP which expressed a chimeric gene encoding a fusion between the 27-kDa Aequorea victoria green fluorescent protein and the amino terminus of the 25-kDa PVX coat protein, assembled into virions and moved both locally and systemically. The PVX.GFP-CP virions were over twice the diameter of wild-type PVX virions. Assembly of PVX.GFP-CP virions required the presence of free coat protein subunits in addition to the fusion protein subunits. PVX.GFP-CP virions accumulated as paracrystalline arrays in infected cells similar to those seen in cells infected with wild-type PVX The formation of virions carrying large superficial fusions illustrates a novel approach for production of high levels of foreign proteins in plants. Aggregates of PVX.GFP-CP particles were fluorescent, emitting green light when excited with ultraviolet light and could be imaged using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The detection of virus particles in infected tissue demonstrates the potential of fusions between the green fluorescent protein and virus coat protein for the non-invasive study of virus multiplication and spread.
