Abstract: It is known that for temporal languages, such as first-order LTL, reasoning about constant (time-independent) relations is almost always undecidable. This applies to temporal description logics as well: constant binary relations together with general concept subsumptions in combinations of LTL and the basic description logic ALC cause undecidability. In this paper, we explore temporal extensions of two recently introduced families of 'weak' description logics known as DL-Lite and EL. Our results are twofold: temporalisations of even rather expressive variants of DL-Lite turn out to be decidable, while the temporalisation of EL with general concept subsumptions and constant relations is undecidable.

Abstract: Query containment is a fundamental algorithmic problem in database query processing and optimization. Under set semantics, the query-containment problem for conjunctive queries has long been known to be NP-complete. In real database systems, however, queries are usually evaluated under bag semantics, not set semantics. In particular, SQL queries are evaluated under bag semantics and return multisets as answers, since duplicates are not eliminated unless explicitly requested. The exact complexity of the query-containment problem for conjunctive queries under bag semantics has been an open problem for more than a decade; in fact, it is not even known whether this problem is decidable.Here, we investigate, under bag semantics, the query-containment problem for conjunctive queries with inequalities. It has been previously shown that, under set semantics, this problem is complete for the second level of the polynomial hierarchy. Our main result asserts that, under bag semantics, the query-containment problem for conjunctive queries with inequalities is undecidable. Actually, we establish the stronger result that this problem is undecidable even if the following two restrictions hold at the same time: (1) the queries use just a single binary relation; and (2) the total number of inequalities is bounded by a certain fixed value. Moreover, the same undecidability results hold under bag-set semantics.

Abstract: Data exchange is the problem of transforming data structured under a source schema into data structured under a target schema in such a way that all constraints of a schema mapping are satisfied. At the heart of data exchange, lies a basic decision problem, called the existence-of-solutions problem: given a source instance, is there a target instance that satisfies the constraints of the schema mapping at hand? Earlier work showed that for schema mappings specified by embedded implicational dependencies, this problem is solvable in polynomial time, assuming that (1) the schema mapping is kept fixed and (2) the constraints of the schema mapping satisfy a certain structural condition, called weak acyclicity.We investigate the effect of these assumptions on the complexity of the existence-of-solutions problem, and show that each one is indispensable in deriving polynomial-time algorithms for this problem. Specifically, using machinery from universal algebra, we show that if the weak acyclicity assumption is relaxed even in a minimal way, then the existence-of-solutions problem becomes undecidable. We also show that if, in addition to the source instance, the schema mapping is part of the input, then the existence-of-solutions problem becomes EXPTIME-complete. Thus, there is a provable exponential gap between the data complexity and the combined complexity of data exchange. Finally, we study restricted classes of schema mappings and develop a comprehensive picture for the combined complexity of the existence-of-solutions problem for these restrictions. In particular, depending on the restriction considered, the combined complexity of this problem turns out to be either EXPTIME-complete or coNP-complete.

Abstract: We introduce higher-order, multi-parameter, tree transducers (HMTTs, for short), which are kinds of higher-order tree transducers that take input trees and output a (possibly infinite) tree. We study the problem of checking whether the tree generated by a given HMTT conforms to a given output specification, provided that the input trees conform to input specifications (where both input/output specifications are regular tree languages). HMTTs subsume higher-order recursion schemes and ordinary tree transducers, so that their verification has a number of potential applications to verification of functional programs using recursive data structures, including resource usage verification, string analysis, and exact type-checking of XML-processing programs.We propose a sound but incomplete verification algorithm for the HMTT verification problem: the algorithm reduces the verification problem to a model-checking problem for higher-order recursion schemes extended with finite data domains, and then uses (an extension of)Kobayashi's algorithm for model-checking recursion schemes. While the algorithm is incomplete (indeed, as we show in the paper, the verification problem is undecidable in general), it is sound and complete for a subclass of HMTTs called linear HMTTs . We have applied our HMTT verification algorithm to various program verification problems and obtained promising results.

Abstract: A notion of alternating timed automata is proposed. It is shown that such automata with only one clock have decidable emptiness problem over finite words. This gives a new class of timed languages that is closed under boolean operations and which has an effective presentation. We prove that the complexity of the emptiness problem for alternating timed automata with one clock is nonprimitive recursive. The proof gives also the same lower bound for the universality problem for nondeterministic timed automata with one clock. We investigate extension of the model with epsilon-transitions and prove that emptiness is undecidable. Over infinite words, we show undecidability of the universality problem.
