TL;DR: An ecological study based on the natural regeneration of the undergrowth was carried out in the S. Lisowski botanical garden of the Faculty of Science, Kisangani University.
Abstract: An ecological study based on the natural regeneration of the undergrowth was carried out in the S. Lisowski botanical garden of the Faculty of Science, Kisangani University. A floristic inventory was conducted taking into account the height and diameter of all individuals. From this inventory, 3901 individuals have been recorded and grouped into 6 species, 6 genera, and 5 families; for the species assessed according to the scale of abundance - dominance of BRAUN BLANQUET, 8 species grouped into 8 genre and 7 families were counted. The obtained result show the dominance of the Leptonychia tokana (1232 feet or 31.58%) species, followed by Costus lucanusianus (881 individuals or 22.58%) and finally Tricalysia bequaertii (741 feet or 18, 29%). Among the Spectra evaluated according to the scale of abundance-dominance of BRAUN BLANQUET, Trachyphrynium braunianum and Anthurium ferrierense are the most abundant. The most represented families in the undergrowth of the garden are the Rubiaceae, Marantaceae, Malvaceae and Costaceae.

TL;DR: The difference suggests that the inhibition of conifer establishment on the ground by dense undergrowth of S. palmata affects the stand structure in the study site, and only P. jezoensis var.
Abstract: Stand structure and its change during recent 8-years were investigated in a subalpine coniferous forest composed of Tsuga diversifolia, Picea jezoensis var. hondoensis, Abies veitchii and Abies mariesii with dense undergrowth of Sasa palmata in a 50×50 m plot on the southeast side of Mt. Ontake, central Japan. Canopy layer contained abundant openings (32 % in relative area). Abies veitchii and A. mariesii showed the L-shaped DBH distribution, while T. diversifolia and P. jezoensis var. hondoensis showed bimodal distribution: two peaks of canopy trees and suppressed trees. Most of T. diversifolia and P. jezoensis var. hondoensis trees had stilt-rooted growth form, or were established on uprooted mounds and buttresses, and few of these species were established on the ground. Two Abies species were often found on the ground more than Tsuga and Picea: however, the relative frequency was only 15% for A. veitchii and 35% for A. mariesii. The majority of Abies trees was established on uprooted mounds, buttresses, and rocks, or they were stilt-rooted. The preference for substrata other than the ground for the establishment microsites of Abies species was more conspicuous as compared to those reported for other subalpine stands with undergrowth without Sasa. The difference suggests that the inhibition of conifer establishment on the ground by dense undergrowth of S. palmata affects the stand structure in the study site. The mortality and recruitment rate for the stand during an 8-year period (1998-2006) was 0.60 %/yr and 1.44 %/yr, respectively, indicating that recruitment was higher than mortality. The loss and gain in total basal area was 0.91 %/yr and 0.96 %/yr, respectively, indicating almost balanced. As for values according to species, only P. jezoensis var. hondoensis showed higher mortality rate and loss in basal area than recruitment rate and gain in basal area, while the other species demonstrated an opposite relationship between these values.

Abstract: The productivity of plants is determined by the efficiency of the assimilation apparatus, which depends on the mode of light and soil conditions. It is especially important to take this into account on the site of former forest lands after fires. The study of the productivity of the burning area after the fire was carried out on the site of rocky pine forests, 14 years after the fire. The study area is 5.3 hectares. The condition of living ground cover (21 species), and undergrowth of the main forest-forming species was studied. The maximum light at the research object, there was a forest fire in 2006, at noon is 23 thousand lux, and under the canopy – 44% less. Soil cover on rock outcrops in the formation stage. The variability of biometric characteristics of needles is shown on the example of young generation of pine. It was found that the length of the needles and the weight depend on the height of the young generation of pine. The dependence on the age of the young generation of pine is less pronounced. The length of the needles is 12-54 mm, the weight of the 100 needles is 0.17-1.43 g. An important factor determining the biometric characteristics of needles is light. In addition, the alternation of micro-depressions, exposed rock outcrops, cracks and protrusions determine the growing conditions, which also determine the success of the formation of a green mass of pine undergrowth

TL;DR: New York City is facing a crisis in its urban ecosystem as wealthy developers and real estate mega-projects rupture the connections between people and the social and spatial webs making up the city's once-rich undergrowth as discussed by the authors .
Abstract: New York City is facing a crisis in its urban ecosystem. As wealthy developers and real estate mega-projects rupture the connections between people and the social and spatial webs making up the city's once-rich undergrowth, how can city-dwellers nurture and restore their metropolitan habitat?

Based on the materials of 9 trial areas (PP), quantitative and qualitative indicators of pre-generation undergrowth under the canopy of birch plantations in the conditions of the spruce lipnyak forest type in the southern taiga region of the European part of Russia were analyzed. It has been established that under the canopy of medium-aged birch stands in the type of forest spruce linden, birch undergrowth with a slight admixture of spruce prevails, and under the canopy of ripe and ripe birch stands, spruce prevails in the undergrowth, which accounts for 8–10 units of composition, fi r and birch also occur in the undergrowth. Only large viable undergrowth is present under the canopy of medium-aged birch stands, and viable undergrowth of all age groups is present under the canopy of ripe and ripe stands, and in some cases there is questionable undergrowth, in all three age groups there is no viable undergrowth. Spruce undergrowth on all test areas has uneven or group placement by area. The latter indicates the complexity of the accumulation of spruce undergrowth under the canopy of birch stands. In all the studied age groups of birch stands, the amount of recorded undergrowth of coniferous species is insuffi cient for successful reforestation. Consequently, when planning the appointment of logging and reforestation activities in birch stands such as the spruce lipnyak forest, it will be necessary to carry out measures to promote natural reforestation, and in some cases artifi cial reforestation. The planning of forestry activities in the conditions of the Dobryansky forestry should be focused on the concomitant and subsequent reforestation with indigenous tree species, forming mixed spruce stands and thereby restoring the indigenous type of forest.
