Abstract: A system for managing multimedia objects such as text, images, sound, and video clips. The system provides improved organization of multimedia objects, through use of albums organized into collections of albums. In addition, improved printout of multimedia objects through user-activateable selection of particular fields from a multimedia database to accompany printouts of multimedia objects. A user interface is defined for allowing a user to obtain a thumbnail view of images in multimedia objects, simply by sliding a mouse cursor over database entry pointing of the image. In addition, a unique architecture of a system for managing multimedia objects is described.

Abstract: A graphical user interface in which object thumbnails are rendered on a simulated three-dimensional surface which (i) exploits spatial memory and (ii) allows more objects to be rendered on a given screen. The objects may be moved, continuously, on the surface with a two-dimensional input device. Furthermore, the interface determines a degree to which each such object is related, either through similarity or matching, to other such objects and displays an appropriate cue proximate to and associated with the former object to visually signify this degree.

Abstract: An interactive trade network is described that integrates distributive messaging using a host computer and telecommunication networks, real-time interactive communications, a hierarchical knowledge matrix containing two familiar and comprehensive indices of classes of goods and classes of establishments and a legend of trade-related, cross-reference terms or parameters, a multiline programmable application, an integrated application program interface, and integrated application programs. The Host System uses each Index Number of each of the indices as a topic board name. The apparatus creates a highly-selective media for either (a) messaging on mutually exclusive indexed topics of trade or (b) engaging in pubic or private real-time conferencing or electronic mail dedicated to any class of indexed economic activity. It enables progressive discussions on, and the retrieval of just the information needed under, discrete indexed topics on trade instantaneously. The interface typically facilitates access to one of thousands of topic boards upon input for, or interpreted to, three key strokes in the selector process. Users may review, broadcast, post or "chain" messages to one party or multiple parties, whether known or anonymous. Messages are cross-referenceable by geographic codes, time and other alpha-numeric descriptors.

Abstract: A scaleable graphical user interface system utilizes a device platform independent model to provide dynamic layout of graphical user interface widgets migrated between any of a plurality of heterogeneous device platforms. The device platform independent model includes at least one platform independent graphical user interface widget. Based on the device platform independent model, platform specific graphical user interface widgets that correspond to each of the platform independent graphical user interface widgets may be laid out on a page and compared to the size of a display screen of a heterogeneous device platform. Where the page does not fit within the display screen, the platform independent graphical user interface widgets may be dynamically rearranged within the page to fit the display screen. In addition, where designated as splitable, the platform independent graphical user interface widgets may be split among multiple pages of a presentation to fit within the display screen.

We discuss user and task modeling, and multimodal fusion, highlighting challenges, open issues, and emerging applications for Multimodal Human Computer Interaction (MMHCI) research.
