TL;DR: By leveraging user-generated tags as preference indicators, a new collaborative approach to user modeling that can be exploited to recommender systems is proposed that provides a better representation in user interests and achieves better recommendation results in terms of accuracy and ranking.
Abstract: With the popularity of social media services, the sheer amount of content is increasing exponentially on the Social Web that leads to attract considerable attention to recommender systems. Recommender systems provide users with recommendations of items suited to their needs. To provide proper recommendations to users, recommender systems require an accurate user model that can reflect a user's characteristics, preferences and needs. In this study, by leveraging user-generated tags as preference indicators, we propose a new collaborative approach to user modeling that can be exploited to recommender systems. Our approach first discovers relevant and irrelevant topics for users, and then enriches an individual user model with collaboration from other similar users. In order to evaluate the performance of our model, we compare experimental results with a user model based on collaborative filtering approaches and a vector space model. The experimental results have shown the proposed model provides a better representation in user interests and achieves better recommendation results in terms of accuracy and ranking.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose to group multiple user and server processes executing in a multi-processor computer into collections such that the processes therein share the same processor affinity, and the allocation of processors to a collection or user session may occur dynamically in response to process creation or deletion, thereby enabling processor allocation to take into account current computer usage patterns.
Abstract: The invention groups multiple user and server processes executing in a multi-processor computer into collections such that the processes therein share the same processor affinity. User processes have an instance dedicated to each computer system user, and are organized into a user collection and within the collection are user sessions associated with a particular user. All of the processes in a user session share the same processor affinity. Server processes typically run as a single instance to support all users, and are organized into server collections. New collections and sessions are dynamically created responsive to the creation of new processes whenever it is determined the new processes should not be assigned to existing collections or sessions. As such, the allocation of processors to a collection or user session may occur dynamically in response to process creation or deletion, thereby enabling processor allocation to take into account current computer usage patterns.

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the feasibility of using personality quizzes to build user profiles not only for an active user but also his or her friends and found that novice users, who are less knowledgeable about music, generally appreciated more personality-based recommenders.
Abstract: Our previous research indicates that using personality quizzes is a viable and promising way to build user profiles to recommend entertainment products Based on these findings, our current research further investigates the feasibility of using personality quizzes to build user profiles not only for an active user but also his or her friends We first propose a general method that infers users' music preferences in terms of their personalities Our in-depth user studies show that while active users perceive the recommended items to be more accurate for their friends, they enjoy more using personality quiz based recommenders for finding items for themselves Additionally, we explore if domain knowledge has an influence on users' perception of the system We found that novice users, who are less knowledgeable about music, generally appreciated more personality-based recommenders Finally, we propose some design issues for recommender systems using personality quizzes.

TL;DR: The use and collection of various widgets may also be recorded by a user profile to determine a user's preferences and interests as discussed by the authors and an advertisement may be distributed by segmenting a user population according to user profile information and one or more attributes of the advertisement.
Abstract: Electronic advertisements and other types of electronic information are distributed based on user profiles and in particular, collections of widgets. User profiles may be generated based on a combination of user entered information and information inferred or derived from user behavior and interaction patterns. The use and collection of various widgets may also be recorded by a user profile to determine a user's preferences and interests. An advertisement may be distributed by segmenting a user population according to user profile information and one or more attributes of the advertisement. Users may further interact with the widgets in a variety of ways including requesting additional information about the advertised product or service and/or requesting communications with an advertiser without compromising their privacy.

TL;DR: In this paper, a finger print reader is used to authenticate user log-off and log-on and also performs user authentication, thus eliminating the need to type a user name and password.
Abstract: A multi-purpose networked data communications system and any easy to use distributed user control interface to such networked system. The system allows easy control of computer applications and external connected devices (home security, audio/video, etc.) Simplifying modifications to the operating system eliminate the need to reboot individually networked workstations on user sign-on and sign-off, thus increasing the speed with which users access the system. Such access time is further increased by the inclusion of a finger print reader which performs user log-off and log-on and also performs user authentication, thus eliminating the need to type a user name and password. The system further provides for “roaming profiles” ensuring that users are presented on sign-on with any previously stored customized display settings and preferences. In addition, a touch-screen user interface provides automatic “tiling” of running applications and permits simplified Web browsing based on a hierarchy of user preferences. Such user interface further provides standardized controls and software for translating user control activities to attached devices, and facilitates access to a suit of easy-to-use applications developed to run on the networked operating system. Relatedly, such networked operating system implements routines for simplifying the front-end control of existing programs. In addition, front-end wrappers are employed to change the appearance and functionality of particular software applications, thus making such applications more accessible to novice users while retaining full functionality for the more advanced user. Finally, the networked operating system provides for device conflict management which prioritizes application interrupts in accordance with a pre-defined or historic logic.
