TL;DR: A presentation of the core features of these commercial systems may provide a source of information and inspiration for the design, implementation, and deployment of future user modeling systems in research and commercial environments.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to present and discuss selected commercial user modeling systems against the background of deployment requirements in real-world environments. Following the recent trend towards personalization on the World Wide Web, these systems are mainly aimed at supporting e-commerce including customer relationship management. In order to guide and structure our review, we define a requirements catalogue that comprises the main dimensions of functionality, data acquisition, representation, extensibility and flexibility, integration of external user-related information, compliance with standards, concern for privacy, and system architecture. Apart from the novelty of such a comparison both inside and outside the classical user modeling literature, a presentation of the core features of these commercial systems may provide a source of information and inspiration for the design, implementation, and deployment of future user modeling systems in research and commercial environments.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and methods for creating and delivering interactive multimedia content that can dynamically adapt to at least one user is presented. But it is not shown to the entire audience.
Abstract: System and methods for creating and delivering interactive multimedia content that can dynamically adapt to at least one user. At least one user model is created for at least one user. The at least one user model represents interests and trends of the at least one user. A multimedia story is developed based on the at least one user model. A customized presentation of the multimedia story is generated. The at least one multimedia story allows for multiple presentations of the multimedia story. The customized presentation is displayed to the at least one user. The customized presentation is modified based on input from the at least one user.

TL;DR: This work shows empirically that user behavior alone can give an accurate picture of the success of the user's web search goals, without considering the relevance of the documents displayed.
Abstract: Web search engines are traditionally evaluated in terms of the relevance of web pages to individual queries. However, relevance of web pages does not tell the complete picture, since an individual query may represent only a piece of the user's information need and users may have different information needs underlying the same queries. In this work, we address the problem of predicting user search goal success by modeling user behavior. We show empirically that user behavior alone can give an accurate picture of the success of the user's web search goals, without considering the relevance of the documents displayed. In fact, our experiments show that models using user behavior are more predictive of goal success than those using document relevance. We build novel sequence models incorporating time distributions for this task and our experiments show that the sequence and time distribution models are more accurate than static models based on user behavior, or predictions based on document relevance.

TL;DR: In this article, a 10-Foot media user interface is described, where a user controls the computer using a remote control device, instead of using a keyboard and mouse from directly in from of the computer.
Abstract: A 10-Foot media user interface is herein described. A computer user interface may be designed for primary use as a 10-Foot user interface, where a user controls the computer using a remote control device, instead of as a traditional 2-Foot user interface where the user controls the computer using keyboard and mouse from directly in from of the computer. The 10-Foot user interface uses 3D space and animations to more clearly indicate navigation and selection of items in the user interface to the controlling user. Use of three-dimensional space also increases the display screen real estate that is available for content items, and allows the media user interface to move unselected items out of primary view of the user. The user interface may animate movement in three-dimensions to allow the user to more easily conceptually follow navigation of the user interface.

TL;DR: The people a user is presumed to know or be associated with may be determined using a number of techniques as mentioned in this paper, which is used in relation to the user's communications, such as access to a user's online presence may be restricted based on the known people such that access to presence is provided only to those people that the user knows.
Abstract: The people a user is presumed to know or be associated with may be determined using a number of techniques. This information about people that the user knows is used in relation to the user's communications. For example access to a user's online presence may be restricted based on the known people such that access to presence is provided only to those people that the user knows.
