TL;DR: How different types of information about a user, ranging from Information about the current context to information about the user’s long-term properties, can simultaneously be relevant to a given adaptation decision are discussed.
Abstract: Research into context-aware computing risks losing sight of the user. This paper discusses how different types of information about a user, ranging from information about the current context to information about the user’s long-term properties, can simultaneously be relevant to a given adaptation decision. Pointers are given to two areas of research that can help with the integration of a broader range of information into context-aware systems: research on user-adaptive systems and on decision-theoretic methods.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method of performing user authentication on web based applications, such as IBM's Network Station Configuration Preference Manager, is presented, where the user information can then be used by CGI programs (20) being executed on the web server for authentication purposes.
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method of performing user authentication on web based applications, such as IBM's Network Station Configuration Preference Manager. In particular, the system and method save and continuously pass user information (29) back and forth between a web client (12) and a web server (16). The user information (29) can then be used by CGI programs (20) being executed on the web server (16) for authentication purposes. Specifically, each CGI program will examine the user information (29), determine the authority privileges of the user, run the CGI program under a non-default user mode, return user information back to the web client (12), and return the CGI job to run in a default user mode.

TL;DR: General methods to support user requirements analysis that can be adapted to a range of situations are described to illustrate how these methods have been applied in practice.
Abstract: Understanding user requirements is an integral part of information systems design and is critical to the success of interactive systems. However specifying these requirements is not so simple to achieve. This paper describes general methods to support user requirements analysis that can be adapted to a range of situations. Some brief case studies are described to illustrate how these methods have been applied in practice.

TL;DR: In this article, a system is disclosed which enables a user of a computer system to have direct control over the priorities assigned to the execution of tasks requested by the user, and the user establishes a user tolerance level indicative of the delay the user is willing to tolerate before a task is assigned to background manager.
Abstract: A system is disclosed which enables a user of a computer system to have direct control over the priorities assigned to the execution of tasks requested by the user. The user establishes a user tolerance level indicative of the delay the user is willing to tolerate before a task is assigned to background manager. Then whenever a task is requested by the user, a calculation is made to determine whether the task will require more or less time than the user tolerance. If the task requires more time, it is assigned to the control of a background manager, while if it requires less time, it is executed to completion immediately without further instruction from the user. The background manager handles the execution of all background tasks, maintaining the proper order for data consistency, yet allowing the user to rearrange execution priorities when necessary.
