TL;DR: By using verb valency information in a post-processing step to the verb phrase extraction system, it is possible to remove improbable complements extracted by the parser and insert probable complements not extracted byThe parser, leading to an increase in both precision and recall for the extracted complements.
Abstract: In this paper we explore the idea of using verb valency information to improve verb phrase extraction from historical text. As a case study, we perform experiments on Early Modern Swedish data, but the approach could easily be transferred to other languages and/or time periods as well. We show that by using verb valency information in a post-processing step to the verb phrase extraction system, it is possible to remove improbable complements extracted by the parser and insert probable complements not extracted by the parser, leading to an increase in both precision and recall for the extracted complements.

TL;DR: This paper investigates the relationship between the number of frames, the length and the frequency of verbs in Hungarian, based on data gathered from the short business news sub-corpus of the Szeged Dependency Treebank and compares the valency frames gathered to those found in a valency lexicon constructed on a theoretical basis.
Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the number of frames, the length and the frequency of verbs in Hungarian, based on data gathered from the short business news sub-corpus of the Szeged Dependency Treebank. We hypothesize that the most frequent verbs have the most valency frames, the shortest verbs are the most frequent ones and the shortest verbs have the most valency frames. We extend our investigations to full valency frames as well, where arguments and adjuncts are treated in the same way. We also compare the valency frames gathered from the treebank to those found in a valency lexicon constructed on a theoretical basis. Our results support the above hypotheses in the case of valency frames and full valency frames as well.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the Operation of the mechanism of message structure is a derivative of a syntactic mechanism of sentence Initiation, which operates when the sentence is linearly unfolding along the axis of time.
Abstract: The theory of message structure has traditionally been semantically-pragmatically oriented, in that it used the planes of meaning and context äs constitutive elements for defining the two major concepts of message structure: theme and rheme. Thus iheme has been defined äs related to previous Information or to known circumstauces, and rheme has been related to new Information. Another model suggested by M.A.K. Halliday, has taken a mechanistic approach, by suggesting that theme is any element in sentence-initial position. I am suggesting that the Operation of the mechanism of message structure is a derivative of a syntactic mechanism of sentence Initiation, which operates when the sentence is linearly unfolding along the axis of time. The discovery proccdure of this mechanism is yradual analysis of sentence compononts. The constitutive elements of message structure (theme and rheme) are based on the syntactic mrchanism of sentenceinitiation, so tha t tho somantic-pra.gmatic facots of thoir behavior constitute (SOIMP of) their functions, not thcir l ) i i i ld i i ig blocks. TL;DR: This paper developed a pragmatic analysis of applicatives, in which applicatives signal that the action denoted by the base verb is being carried out in some way remarkably, and so differently from normal expectations about the action.
Abstract: Bantu applicatives are standardly analysed syntactically, as encoding a change in valency. However, in many cases applicatives do not change valency, but are rather related to a change in interpretation. In particular pragmatic functions of applicatives related to focus and emphasis are often noted in the description of individual languages, but are very rarely reflected in typological or theoretical work. To address this problem, this paper develops a pragmatic analysis of applicatives, in which applicatives signal that the action denoted by the base verb is being carried out in some way remarkably, and so differently from normal expectations about the action. Pragmatic effects are found with all uses of applicatives, and may lead to a change in valency, or not. Absence of a change in valency is found in particular with locative and instrument applicatives, while benefactive applicatives almost always entail a change in valency. This is related to the thematic hierarchy: Beneficiaries occupy a high position in the thematic hierarchy and have a strong effect on the expectedness of the action expressed. The advantage of our analysis is that it addresses both interpretational and structural aspects of applicative constructions and provides a unified explanation for them.
