TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the implications of global sourcing for the innovative capacity of the outsourcing company and argued that the loss of organizational proximity that is inherent in outsourcing is compounded by the increase in geographical distance.
Abstract: The main message of the proponents of strategic outsourcing is that it pays off to concentrate on the activities that you are good at. The result of specialization along the value chain will be a product that will be more competitive in terms of price, quality, and innovation. Globalization has many dimensions, but here we mainly want to consider the movement of manufacturing activities to low wage locations. In this paper we will investigate the implications of global sourcing for the innovative capacity of the outsourcing company. We will argue that these implications will be more pronounced in the case of global sourcing, because in that case the loss of organizational proximity that is inherent in outsourcing is compounded by the increase in geographical distance. The findings presented in this paper are the results from an ongoing research project on the relationships between research, development, and manufacturing against the background of increased global outsourcing of manufacturing. The...

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative case study was conducted on several manufacturing organizations in the electrical and electronic industry, investigating the business drivers and response effect of a flexible value chain, and an exploratory study to examine the interrelated factors to propose a research framework.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate supply chain management practices related to flexibility, value chain and capabilities. It describes an exploratory study to examine the interrelated factors to propose a research framework.Design/methodology/approach – A comparative case study was conducted on several manufacturing organizations in the electrical and electronic industry, investigating the business drivers and response effect of a flexible value chain.Findings – In general, all the organizations enhanced their manufacturing flexibility components with supply and logistic networks in order to be responsive to customers and gain tangible benefits. The core flexibility of the value chain can be defined from operational, supply and logistics perspectives where different levels of integration and implementation strategies offer different levels of flexibility response to volume and product mix.Research limitations/implications – Research through case survey requires further empirical invest...

TL;DR: The use of the value chain concept suggested by Porter as a tool in establishing service operations strategy and the revised model for examining resource allocation using a resource activity mapping technique within a workshop environment are described.
Abstract: This explores the use of the value chain concept suggested by Porter as a tool in establishing service operations strategy. The original model has been adapted to emphasise the operational context to produce a framework for considering service delivery to meet strategic objectives. The use of the revised model for examining resource allocation using a resource activity mapping technique within a workshop environment is described.
