TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the role of middlemen in the first ever Fair Trade USA fishery: handline-caught yellowfin tuna from Molucca in Indonesia, and find that middlemen contribute but also control the full range of assets required to enable fishers to fulfill their value chain functions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the effect of supply chain agility on customer service, differentiation, and business performance, and concluded that the most effective way to improve business performance is through improved customer service and differentiation.
Abstract: To improve business performance in rapidly changing environments, supply chain agility can be a crucial requisite to address responsiveness issues, especially in environments with high levels of customization. This paper examines the effect of supply chain agility on customer service, differentiation, and business performance. A survey research methodology was employed using a sample of 156 manufacturing firms that provide high levels of customization. In particular, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to evaluate the proposed model. The results suggest that supply chain agility influences customer service and differentiation positively. However, it does not affect business performance directly; instead, better business performance can be achieved and mediated through improved customer service and differentiation. In particular, differentiation through customer service is the most effective way to improve business performance, and supply chain agility can help to achieve high-level customer service. The paper advises managers on details of how to fulfil their business performance ambitions better through suggested key agile supply chain management activities.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of the broadly defined automotive industry on regional increases in unemployment in the Czech Republic (Czechia) during the 2008-2009 economic crisis was evaluated and the relationship between a firm's position in the value chain and its propensity to dismiss workers was investigated.
Abstract: This paper evaluates the influence of the broadly defined automotive industry on regional increases in unemployment in the Czech Republic (Czechia) during the 2008‐2009 economic crisis. Drawing on a unique database of 490 firms with 20 or more employees each and a survey of 274 firms, we employ eight indicators to explain changes in the microregional unemployment rate between August 2008 and August 2009. We also introduce and calculate the value creation potential, employment stability potential and regional labour market vulnerability index for each firm and investigate the relationship between a firm’s position in the value chain and its propensity to dismiss workers.

01 Jan 2013TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between competitiveness in manufacturing and the quality of key supporting services is analyzed, and it is concluded that new ways of doing business where manufacturers build relationships with customers and compete on the basis of products they are willing to pay a premium for has the potential to become an important driving force for growth after the great recession, provided that adequate support from competitive services markets is in place.
Abstract: This study analyses the relationships between competitiveness in manufacturing and the quality of key supporting services. Three indicators of competitiveness are considered: the degree of product differentiation, unit prices obtained in export markets and the duration of trade. The density of telecoms networks and the reliability of electricity supply stand out as the most crucial for competitive manufacturing. In addition the ease at which contracts can be enforced and the time it takes to export and import goods are strongly related to competitiveness. Our methodology allows us to go beyond a one size fits all policy analysis. Interestingly, we find that in low-income countries, the impact of services quality and policy on competitiveness is highest in low-technology industries; in middle-income countries it is highest in medium-technology sectors and in high-income countries the impact is highest in medium-high and high-technology industries. This suggests that better services contribute to moving up the value chain in industries where a country already has technological capacity and comparative advantage, but better services alone may not stimulate product differentiation in sectors where a country is far from the competitive edge – at least not in the short run. Policy reforms needed are to simplify procedures for contract enforcement, liberalisation of FDI, strengthen pro-competitive regulation of network services, and eliminate tariffs. It is concluded that new ways of doing business where manufacturers build relationships with customers and compete on the basis of products they are willing to pay a premium for has the potential to become an important driving force for growth after the great recession, provided that adequate support from competitive services markets is in place.
