TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of supply chain management is presented and the authors argue that only through close collaborative linkages through the entire supply chain, can one fully achieve the benefits of cost reduction and revenue enhancing behaviors.
Abstract: States that we have witnessed, over the last several years, a profound change in understanding the dynamics of competitive advantage. Managers now acknowledge that a firm’s success is tied, in part, to the strength of its weakest supply chain partner. This paper develops the concept of supply chain management and argues that only through close collaborative linkages through the entire supply chain, can one fully achieve the benefits of cost reduction and revenue enhancing behaviors. Data are presented that look at a range of supply chain management practices and processes. By examining differences in practices and processes between buyers and sellers, along with the supply chain, attempts to understand better the challenges facing managers who espouse supply chain management. Also proposes a change in mind set for the traditional procurement manager and present insights for him/her to adapt to the requirements of the new competition.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report on action research carried in two red meat industry supply chains, each of which spanned the whole chain from farm to consumer, and build on existing theoretical work to show that value chain analysis methods combined with lean principles can provide a powerful framework for the analysis and improvement of supply chain activity.
Abstract: Purpose – To show how value chain analysis techniques have highlighted opportunities for strategic change in a UK agri‐food supply chain and to present an initial model of an integrated supply chain based on the application of lean principles.Design/methodology/approach – The paper reports on action research carried in two red meat industry supply chains, each of which spanned the whole chain from farm to consumer. Both of these case studies involved teams of managers from the companies in the chains together with facilitation by the researcher.Findings – The paper builds on existing theoretical work to show that value chain analysis methods combined with lean principles can provide a powerful framework for the analysis and improvement of supply chain activity.Research limitations/implications – The research is based on case studies of only two supply chains both of which were related to pork products. It would be beneficial if further studies could be undertaken of other agri‐food chains in meat and in o...

TL;DR: Heterogeneity into the international expansion behavior model of Chinese enterprises in the context of global value chain specialization is introduced and a new concept of enterprise advantage based on the value chain status from the research category of international trade theory is expanded.
Abstract: Since the beginning of the new millennium, the productivity differences among different enterprises within the industry, namely the heterogeneity of enterprises, have been incorporated into the general equilibrium trade model. At the same time, it brings new focus to trade theory: By analyzing the characteristics of individual enterprises, it analyzes the choice of organizational structure of individual enterprises. Outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) and international trade are the two most important international economic activities nowadays. The development of OFDI will have certain impact on export trade. The relationship between OFDI and export trade is different due to the specific national conditions of different countries. Against this background, we study the impact of China’s expanding OFDI on export trade. We should make better use of OFDI to promote the development of China’s export trade and improve the export-oriented economic mode that relies solely on exports to expand the international market. It not only has theoretical value, but also has practical guiding significance for the formulation of China’s “going out” economic and trade policy. This study introduces heterogeneity into the international expansion behavior model of Chinese enterprises in the context of global value chain specialization. Taking the position of Chinese enterprises in the value chain as the location dimension, we have integrated and expanded a new concept of enterprise advantage based on the value chain status from the research category of international trade theory. In this paper, we introduce the behavior of competitors into the dimension of enterprise decision space and construct an endogenous dynamic equilibrium model of Chinese enterprises’ export trade and OFDI. The purpose is to provide theoretical explanations and practical guidance for Chinese enterprises’ export trade and endogenous optimization decision making in the process of deepening the division of labor in the global value chain.

TL;DR: In this paper, the case of GMO-free soybean supply illustrates the various aspects of risk prevention that can lead to a systematic model of sustainable supply chain management, which can put companies in a privileged position to deliver sustainable and reliable longterm benefits to all stakeholders in the value chain.
Abstract: A well designed risk-oriented supply chain management can put companies in a privileged position to deliver sustainable and reliable long-term benefits to all stakeholders in the value chain. The case of GMO-free soybean supply illustrates the various aspects of risk prevention that can lead to a systematic model of sustainable supply chain management. The article illustrates how – after consumers pressed the food industry to exclude GMO soybeans from their products – a sustainable soybean supply chain was established. Approaching the issue on a pragmatic basis, several tools have proved to be useful in constructing the supply chain. The authors show what the crucial points of sustainable supply chain management are. They point out the great contribution of standards and platforms such as BSCI, ETI, SA8000 and Fairtrade labelling, whereas process models such as AA1000 provide useful guidance on immunization against potential stakeholder risks. Finally, the article shows how a systematic approach can help companies to establish their tailored sustainable supply chain management. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment.

TL;DR: In this article, a useful and practical guide written for policy-makers and practitioners aims to improve the ability of local enterprises to compete in the global economy and generate sustainable jobs and income for local people.
Abstract: This useful and practical guide written for policy-makers and practitioners aims to improve the ability of local enterprises to compete in the global economy and generate sustainable jobs and income for local people. Enterprises do not simply export their output into an anonymous global market; often they feed into supply chains that are governed by powerful global actors. Value chain analysis demonstrates that the relationship with these global actors exerts a major influence on upgrading and earning opportunities of local enterprises. A value chain is the sequence of activities required to make a product or provide a service. Value chain analysis for policy-makers and practitioners presents the key insights of the value chain approach and the questions it raises about how the global economy is organized and how local enterprises can participate more effectively in it. It also sets out why this new analytical approach is important for policy-makers and practitioners. Specific policy problems are also discussed, and practical ideas about how to address these challenges are provided.
