TL;DR: In this paper, a gap between knowledge sourcing and value of new product innovation is filled by two distinct effects which are derived from technology sourcing modes: the value creation effect and the value appropriability effect.
Abstract: New product innovations (NPI) continuously are vital for organizational sustained competitive advantage. Due to the nature of R&D intensity and multidisciplinary in the high-technology industry, it is difficult to develop new products by a single firm. Firms rely on external technological resources necessarily through several ways to maintain their pipeline of products, e.g., merger and acquisition (M&A), strategic alliance, or licensing. Previous studies have discussed the magnitude of market response when an innovation disclosed, but rare research deal with the technology origins of the NPI. This current study fulfills the gap between knowledge sourcing and value of new product innovation. In this current study, we attempt to interpret the performance of new product innovation by two distinct effects which are derived from technology sourcing modes: the value creation effect and the value appropriability effect. Value creation effect derived from studies of organization learning and suggests that the integration of technology sourcing will enhance value of NPI and firm performance. By contrast, following the perspective of property rights, lacking of power to control the ownership of technology will undermine the appropriability of firm and eventually decrease value of NPI.

TL;DR: In this article, a value-based procurement model and risk management approach was used to minimize project cost for the construction of the Nisku Spine Road in the City of Edmonton.
Abstract: The Queen Elizabeth II Highway provides the sole transportation link between the city of Edmonton and the city of Leduc. Over 35,000 vehicles commute between these areas on a daily basis, while the Edmonton International Airport is strategically positioned between them. The Canadian government has recognized the need for an alternative transportation corridor in this area. The necessary funding for Phase 1A of the 14.4 mi of new road construction was provided under the Building Canada Fund. The proposed Nisku Spine Road will be completed in four separate phases. The objective of this study was to draw analysis from a government’s implementation of a value-based procurement model and risk management approach to minimize project cost. Under this procurement model, the overall project costs were reduced through past contractor experience, risk assessment plans, and value added options. The selected firm’s proposal was 30% below the original anticipated cost of $21.8 million dollars. Furthermore, the contractor was able to offer a value added option that resulted in additional savings of approximately $1 million dollars. In all, a total savings of $7.5 million dollars was realized by the utilization of the value-based procurement method for this publicly funded heavy/civil construction project.

TL;DR: In this paper, a Decision Support System (DSS) based on the object-orient database is built to computerize the calculating procedure of ABC and to show the manufacturing cost structure of different products.
Abstract: This research is based on the Activity-based Costing (ABC) methodology and the object-oriented technology to analyze, design, and implement cost objects, such as resource, activity, and database, in the manufacturing systems for the construction of a rudiment of a cost database. Then, a Decision Support System (DSS) based on the object-orient database is built to computerize the calculating procedure of ABC and to show the manufacturing cost structure of different products. The DSS can be divided into various cost management modules to assist decision making of different manufacturing alternatives. The Value Engineering module is built into the DSS to illustrate the comparison of alternative system operation policies for the continuous improvement of the manufacturing system. The application of the DSS to a semi-conductor test plant is used to demonstrate its capability.

TL;DR: The typical savings possible from the application of VE and the areas where savings can be expected on a pipeline VE study are examined.
Abstract: This paper describes the Value Engineering (VE) process and its application to pipeline projects. Eight different projects to which VE was applied were studied. The unique characteristics of these pipeline VE studies are described, along with the benefits gained through VE. The typical savings possible from the application of VE and the areas where savings can be expected on a pipeline VE study are examined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors applied value engineering theory to calculate current and objective function costs of natural lighting environment of gymnasium based on the qualitative and quantitative function analysis, and analyzed the relationship between function, cost and value.
Abstract: The research was mainly aimed at the hotspot of natural lighting environment of gymnasium design in China, and applied Value Engineering Theory to calculate current and objective function costs of natural lighting environment of gymnasium based on the qualitative and quantitative function analysis. Using Function Analysis Systematic Technique, the relationship between function, cost and value was analysised to seek the lowest costs of natural lighting environment of gymnasium functions. Using the idea of all-life design, and aiming at value pursuit and value realization as the goal of natural lighting environment of gymnasium design, a design idea and theory frame are constructed.
