Abstract: 17,435. Heymann, H., Hey, H., Smith, J., Mitchell, H. L., and Askham, W H. Aug. 10. Gases, separating mixtures of.-In an apparatus for condensing, and separating from air, the vapours of volatile liquids, such as are used as solvents in cleaning woollen cloths, making india-rubber, &c., the vapours are led by a pipe q through an oil container p and thence to a condenser. The condenser is formed of a cylinder a, surrounded by a cooling - jacket b and containing inclined baffles c separated by a vertical wire-gauze partition, the edges of which project into the cooling-jacket. The condensed liquid and vapours pass to a vessel t having circular baffles arranged so that heavy liquids collect in the central compartment and lighter liquids pass to the outer one. If air be mixed with the vapours, the vessel t is connected to a vacuum pump. Saturated oil from the container p is led by a pipe s into the vessel t. In a second form of condenser, nests of vertical tubes are separated by horizontal partitions of wire gauze and arranged so that cooling-water circulates on the outside while the vapours pass down the inside of the tubes. Oil may be passed down the condenser together with the vapours. In this case, a condenser packed with coke or the like may be used, and the cooling may be dispensed with.
