TL;DR: In this paper, a composite, chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid)/vermiculite, was prepared by aqueous dispersion polymerization using chitasan as the stabilizer, acrylic acid as the monomer and vermiculites as the inorganic additive.
Abstract: In this study, a composite, chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid)/vermiculite, was prepared by aqueous dispersion polymerization using chitosan as the stabilizer, acrylic acid as the monomer and vermiculite as the inorganic additive. It was then cross-linked with common divalent or trivalent cations to obtain adsorbents with a higher affinity for phosphate ions. Factors influencing the adsorption capacity were investigated, the results indicating that the trivalent ion cross-linked hybrid exhibited a potential for the removal of phosphate ions and that a lower concentration of cross-linking agent could achieve the complete cross-linking of carboxylate groups within the composite. The adsorption of phosphate ions onto the developed adsorbent was pH-dependent, with a lower pH yielding a higher adsorption capacity. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to describe the adsorption data; the maximum adsorption capacity of 22.64 mg/g was comparable with that reported for other adsorbents. Desorption studies showe...

TL;DR: In this paper, soil samples collected from 33 outcrops of weathered plutonic, hypabyssal, and volcanic rocks scattered along a 1400 km traverse from the West Antarctic coastline to the Polar Plateau were analysed for clay mineral content.
Abstract: Soil samples collected from 33 outcrops of weathered plutonic, hypabyssal, and volcanic rocks scattered along a 1400 km traverse from the West Antarctic coastline to the Polar Plateau were analysed for clay mineral content. Clay minerals present (in approximate order of abundance) are “mica”, chlorite, illite-smectite, smectite, kaolinite and vermiculite. The large amount of “mica” and/or chlorite in almost all host rocks and their associate soils, the small amount of clay (generally < 1%) present in all soils, the weak development of most soil proflles, and the large amount of glass in the clay-sized fraction of soils developed on Tertiary basaltic rocks indicate that physical weathering is the dominant process of weathering in this area. Smectite, vermiculite and illite-smectite are products of chemical weathering. Kaolinite in soils from the Thiel Mountains is unusual, because formation of this mineral is generally thought to require at least moderate amounts of leaching. We feel that kaolinit...

TL;DR: In this paper, a building material is prepared by blending unswollen vermiculite with a base material selected from one or more kinds of cement, calcium silicate and slag gypsum.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a building material which more effectively utilizes vermiculite as a natural resource, can satisfy the demand of humidity conditioning and/or deodorizing and further of beautiful appearance, is excellent in balance between amount and speed of moisture absorption/release in particular and further has improved bending strength, flexibility and productivity. SOLUTION: A composition for the building material is prepared by blending unswollen vermiculite with a base material selected from one or more kinds of cement, calcium silicate and slag gypsum, wherein the blending amount of the unswollen vermiculite is 0.5-70 mass% of the total composition (solid content). The composition is characterized in that the unswollen vermiculite of ≤300 μm is 0.5-15 mass% of the total composition (solid content). COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
