TL;DR: A new 3D plane representation of the scene is presented which improves the performance of current standard video codecs in the view synthesis domain and opens up the possibility to code multiview images with a unique representation.
Abstract: In 3D video, view synthesis is used to create new virtual views between encoded camera views. Errors in the coding of the depth maps introduce geometry inconsistencies in synthesized views. In this paper, a new 3D plane representation of the scene is presented which improves the performance of current standard video codecs in the view synthesis domain. Two image segmentation algorithms are proposed for generating a color and depth segmentation. Using both partitions, depth maps are segmented into regions without sharp discontinuities without having to explicitly signal all depth edges. The resulting regions are represented using a planar model in the 3D world scene. This 3D representation allows an efficient encoding while preserving the 3D characteristics of the scene. The 3D planes open up the possibility to code multiview images with a unique representation.

TL;DR: A novel rendering algorithm based on depth image warping to support virtual pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) functionalities during 3D view generation and a novel selective warping scheme is presented to reduce the computational cost by as much as 40% while maintaining an acceptable quality of rendering results.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel rendering algorithm based on depth image warping to support virtual pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) functionalities during 3D view generation. A method based on "3D-ness" knob is proposed for automatically specifying the virtual camera positions along a path, to model the PTZ mechanism in projective framework. Two novel quality enhancing techniques based on segmentation cues are proposed to add pan, tilt and zoom capabilities during arbitrary view synthesis. In addition to reduce the computational load that results in providing such functionalities, a novel selective warping scheme is presented to reduce the computational cost by as much as 40% while maintaining an acceptable quality of rendering results. Experiments are performed using standard "Breakdancers" and "Ballet" video sequences to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods as compared to currently published results.

TL;DR: The described synthesis technique is based on the hybrid view synthesis, combining advantages of forward-type and backward-type synthesis, allowing to synthesize high resolution sequences in the real time, allowing the viewer to freely navigate around the scene, e.g. volleyball playfield.
Abstract: This paper presents the fast virtual view synthesis method for free navigation purposes. Presented method was implemented on CPU in order to allow free navigation for even cheap personal computers with integrated graphic cards. The described synthesis technique is based on the hybrid view synthesis, combining advantages of forward-type and backward-type synthesis. It allows to synthesize high resolution sequences in the real time, allowing the viewer to freely navigate around the scene, e.g. volleyball playfield. Three implementations were developed and tested: single-threaded, vectorized and multithreaded implementation.

TL;DR: This paper presents a method to efficiently synthesize new views based on the two existing views from the stereo input that can be implemented in real-time and is also capable of handling uncalibrated stereo input.
Abstract: For multiview auto-stereoscopic 3D displays, available stereo content needs to be converted to multiview content. In this paper we present a method to efficiently synthesize new views based on the two existing views from the stereo input. This method can be implemented in real-time and is also capable of handling uncalibrated stereo input. Good performance is shown compared to state-of-the-art disparity estimation algorithms and view rendering methods.

TL;DR: The proposed algorithm can carry out the correction of noise resulting from stereo matching, removal of occlusions to achieve high fidelity rendering, and parallel computing to achieve real-time synthesis.
Abstract: We suggest an efficient real-time method for removing occlusions when synthesizing intermediate views from two stereo images by stereo matching algorithm. The proposed method can carry out the correction of noise resulting from stereo matching, removal of occlusions to achieve high fidelity rendering, and parallel computing to achieve real-time synthesis. The proposed algorithm is compared with state-of-the-art algorithms to show its improved performance in terms of rendering and computational speed.
