TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an indication of the kinds of acoustic attributes that should be extracted from the speech signal in a potential scheme for machine recognition of speech, and a discussion of the roles that must be played by acoustic data and by linguistic constraints in schemes for automatic speech recognition.
Abstract: : The acoustic properties of a number of different speech sounds as they appear in several phonetic contexts are described. This report supplements an earlier report on the same topic and presents data for stop and nasal consonants in prestressed position, for the timing of vowels, and for acoustic events following stressed vowels. The aims of this survey are to provide an indication of the kinds of acoustic attributes that should be extracted from the speech signal in a potential scheme for machine recognition of speech. Also included is a discussion of the roles that must be played by acoustic data and by linguistic constraints in schemes for automatic speech recognition.
