Abstract: In this paper, we experimentally realized a gigabit-class indoor visible light communication system using commercially available RGB White LED and exploiting an optimized DMT modulation. We achieved data rate of 1.5 Gbit/s with single channel and 3.4 Gbit/s by implementing WDM transmission at standard illumination levels. In both experiments, the resulting bit error ratios were below the FEC limit. To the best of our knowledge, these values are the highest ever achieved in VLC systems.

Abstract: In this paper, a novel scheme for data reception in a mobile phone using visible light communications (VLC) is proposed. The camera of the smartphone is used as a receiver in order to capture the continuous changes in state (on-off) of the light, which are invisible to the human eye. The information is captured in the camera in the form of light and dark bands which are then decoded by the smartphone and the received message is displayed. By exploiting the rolling shutter effect of CMOS sensors, a data rate much higher than the camera frame rate is achieved.

Abstract: This article presents recent achievements and trends in high-speed indoor visible light communication (VLC) research. We address potential applications and future visions for the VLC technology, where transport of information is “piggybacked” on the original lighting function of LED-based lamps. To mature this technology and transfer it into practice, our recent research is focused on real-time implementation and trials. For the first time, a bidirectional real-time VLC prototype achieving data rates of up to 500 Mb/s is presented. This system paves the way for future real world applications. Finally, we discuss the remaining technical challenges as well as the research outlook in the field of high-speed VLC systems.

Abstract: As Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot provide satisfying performance in indoor environments, indoor positioning technology, which utilizes indoor wireless signals instead of GPS signals, has grown rapidly in recent years. Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.

Abstract: Solid-state lighting is a rapidly developing field. White-light and other visible LEDs are becoming more efficient, have high reliability and can be incorporated into many lighting applications. Recent examples include car head-lights based on white LEDs, and LED illumination as an architectural feature. The prediction that general illumination will use white LEDs in the future has been made, due to the increased energy efficiency that such an approach may have. Such sources can also be modulated at high-speed, offering the possibility of using sources for simultaneous illumination and data communications. Such visible light communications (VLC) was pioneered in Japan, and there is now growing interest worldwide, including within bodies such as the Visible Light Communications Consortium (VLCC) and the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF). In this paper we outline the basic components in these systems, review the state of the art and discuss some of the challenges and possibilities for this new wireless transmission technique.
