01 Aug 1996TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed experimental and theoretical study of nonlinear distortion in laser diodes is undertaken to provide practical proving of the effectiveness and utility of the Volterra series method.
Abstract: A detailed comparative experimental and theoretical study of nonlinear distortion in laser diodes is undertaken to provide practical proving of the effectiveness and utility of the Volterra series method. The observed harmonic and intermodulation distortion levels are compared with the results given by the Volterra series nonlinear laser model using intrinsic parameters extracted from reflection and small-signal frequency response measurements. Second-harmonic, two-tone and three-tone intermodulation distortion data are all found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results, providing endorsement of the Volterra series approach for the study of distortion in microwave subcarrier optical systems.

TL;DR: A submitted manuscript is the author's version of the article upon submission and before peer-review as discussed by the authors, and the final published version features the final layout of the paper including the volume, issue and page numbers.
Abstract: • A submitted manuscript is the author's version of the article upon submission and before peer-review. There can be important differences between the submitted version and the official published version of record. People interested in the research are advised to contact the author for the final version of the publication, or visit the DOI to the publisher's website. • The final author version and the galley proof are versions of the publication after peer review. • The final published version features the final layout of the paper including the volume, issue and page numbers.

01 Nov 2014TL;DR: A fifth-order Inverse Volterra Series Transfer Function based nonlinearities compensation for ultra high data rate optical fiber communications using OFDM significantly improves the performance in terms of BER and/or transmission distance.
Abstract: We propose a fifth-order Inverse Volterra Series Transfer Function based nonlinearities compensation for ultra high data rate optical fiber communications using OFDM. The main contributions consists of deriving the corresponding fifth-order kernels. Compared to the third-order case, we significantly improve the performance in terms of BER and/or transmission distance.

TL;DR: It is pointed out that while the Volterra kernels can easily be derived from the block-oriented models, the structure and the parameters cannot be computed in a trivial way from the estimated VolterRA kernels.
Abstract: Block-oriented models having only one multiplier and the Volterra kernels that describe them are summarized. The kernel estimation of the discrete Volterra series is dealt with. It is pointed out that while the Volterra kernels can easily be derived from the block-oriented models, the structure and the parameters of the block-oriented models cannot be computed in a trivial way from the estimated Volterra kernels. Both graphical and analytical procedures are recommended for the structural identification. The method is supported by several simulation examples.
