TL;DR: In this article, the effect of residual stress in the surface layer on the deformation of elastic-plastic layered media due to indentation and sliding contact loading and unloading was analyzed with the finite element method.
Abstract: The effect of residual stress in the surface layer on the deformation of elastic-plastic layered media due to indentation and sliding contact loading and unloading was analyzed with the finite element method. A three-dimensional finite element model of a rigid sphere interacting with a deformable layered medium was developed, and its accuracy was evaluated by contrasting finite element results with analytical solutions for the surface stresses of an elastic homogeneous half-space subjected to normal and friction surface traction. Deformation of the layered medium is interpreted in terms of the dependence of the von Mises equivalent stress, first principal stress, and equivalent plastic strain on the magnitudes of residual stress and coefficient of friction. The effect of residual stress on the propensity for yielding and cracking in the layered medium is discussed in the context of results for the maximum Mises and tensile stresses and the evolution of plasticity in the subsurface. It is shown that the optimum residual stress in the surface layer depends on the type of contact loading (indentation or sliding), coefficient of friction, and dominant deformation mode in the layer (i.e., plastic deformation or cracking).

TL;DR: In this paper, a numerical method based on the extension of the variable material property method was developed to obtain the elasto-plastic stress field in a functionally graded (FG) rotating disk.
Abstract: A numerical method based on the extension of the variable material property method was developed to obtain the elasto-plastic stress field in a functionally graded (FG) rotating disk. The method was applied to estimate the stress field in a metal–ceramic functionally graded solid disk. To establish the validity of the proposed method, results were compared with finite element results. Unlike uniform rotating disks, where yielding starts from the disk center, plasticity in FG disks can originate at any point. The effect of different metal–ceramic grading patterns as well as the relative elastic moduli and densities of the ceramic and metallic constituents on the developed stresses were studied. Reinforcement of a metal disk with ceramic particles, in both elastic and plastic regimes, can significantly influence the mechanical response of the disk such as the stress distribution and the critical angular velocities corresponding to the onset of plasticity in the disk and plastic disk. Disks with increasing ceramic content from inner to outer radius showed a more uniform von Mises stress distribution for a fixed value of total ceramic content. In contrast, disks with decreasing ceramic content from inner to outer radius had the lowest outer edge displacement for a fixed value of total ceramic content.

TL;DR: In this paper, the simultaneous magnetic and structural topology optimization of a transverse laminated synchronous reluctance machine rotor using a solid isotropic with material penalization (SIMP)-based approach with the globally convergent method of moving asymptotes (GCMMA) optimization algorithm is presented.
Abstract: This article presents the simultaneous magnetic and structural topology optimization of a transverse laminated synchronous reluctance machine rotor using a solid isotropic with material penalization (SIMP)-based approach with the globally convergent method of moving asymptotes (GCMMA) optimization algorithm. Magneto-structural single and multi-objective optimization formulations are presented. The single objective formulation maximizes the average torque subject to constraints on torque ripple, Von Mises stress, and compliance. The multiobjective formulation simultaneously maximizes average torque and minimizes compliance subject to constraints on torque ripple and Von Mises stress. In both optimization formulations, the electrical steel densities in the rotor mesh elements are the control variables. Including stress and compliance in the optimization formulation ensures a structurally feasible design. The design-dependent centripetal force contributed by each element in the rotor mesh is considered dependent on its density and mass. An intermediate density material issue is observed where the density of the material in a mesh element does not converge fully to air or electrical steel. This issue is addressed through the use of a thresholding mass function which forces the convergence of the mass but not the density. The two optimization formulations are compared for rotors operating at 4000 and 12 000 r/min. An initial magnetic only topology optimization is used to seed the magneto-structural topology optimization to decrease the computational time. The impact of the magnetic only seed and rotor mesh density on the optimization outcomes is also examined.
