TL;DR: This unique book represents a coherent and comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of optical communications, signal processing and coding for optical channels, and is the first to integrate the basics of coding theory with the fundamentalsof optical communication.
Abstract: In order to adapt to the ever-increasing demands of telecommunication needs, todays network operators are implementing 100 Gb/s per dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channel transmission At those data rates, the performance of fiberoptic communication systems is degraded significantly due to intra- and inter-channel fiber nonlinearities, polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and chromatic dispersion In order to deal with those channel impairments, novel advanced techniques in modulation and detection, coding and signal processing are needed This unique book represents a coherent and comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of optical communications, signal processing and coding for optical channels It is the first to integrate the fundamentals of coding theory with the fundamentals of optical communication

TL;DR: A 4x4 spatially non-blocking Mach-Zehnder based silicon optical switch fabricated using processes fully compatible with standard CMOS successfully demonstrates operation in all 9 unique switch states and 12 possible I/O routing configurations.
Abstract: We present a 4x4 spatially non-blocking Mach-Zehnder based silicon optical switch fabricated using processes fully compatible with standard CMOS. We successfully demonstrate operation in all 9 unique switch states and 12 possible I/O routing configurations, with worst-case cross-talk levels lower than −9 dB, and common spectral bandwidth of 7 nm. High-speed 40 Gbps data transmission experiments verify optical data integrity for all input-output channels.

TL;DR: A new architecture for implementing unidirectional and bidirectional self-healing interoffice ring networks using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology for growth is proposed.
Abstract: A new architecture for implementing unidirectional and bidirectional self-healing interoffice ring networks using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology for growth is proposed. The working ring uses all-optical drop-and-add multiplexers at each office and the protection path uses optical amplifiers and optical switches. The use of WDM technology, combined with all-optical drop-and-add multiplexers, accommodates growth to a network capacity of more than 1 Tb/s. >

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate record 25.6-Tb/s transmission over 240 km using 160 WDM channels on a 50GHz grid in the C+L bands, each channel contains two polarization-multiplexed 85.4-Gb/s RZ-DQPSK signals.
Abstract: We demonstrate record 25.6-Tb/s transmission over 240 km using 160 WDM channels on a 50-GHz grid in the C+L bands. Each channel contains two polarization-multiplexed 85.4-Gb/s RZ-DQPSK signals, yielding a spectral efficiency of 3.2b/s/Hz in each band.
