Abstract: Joint scheduling and power control schemes have previously been proposed to reduce power dissipation in wireless ad hoc networks. However, instead of power consumption, throughput is a more important performance concern for some emerging multihop wireless networks, such as wireless mesh networks. This paper examines joint link scheduling and power control with the objective of throughput improvement. The MAximum THroughput link Scheduling with Power Control (MATH-SPC) problem is first formulated and then a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is presented to provide optimal solutions. However, simply maximizing the throughput may lead to a severe bias on bandwidth allocation among links. To achieve a good tradeoff between throughput and fairness, a new parameter called the demand satisfaction factor (DSF) to characterize the fairness of bandwidth allocation and formulate the MAximum Throughput fAir link Scheduling with Power Control (MATA-SPC) problem is defined. An MILP formulation and an effective polynomial-time heuristic algorithm, namely, the serial linear programming rounding (SLPR) heuristic, to solve the MATA-SPC problem are also presented. Numerical results show that bandwidth can be fairly allocated among all links/flows by solving the MILP formulation or by using the heuristic algorithm at the cost of a minor reduction of network throughput. In addition, extensions to end-to-end throughput and fairness and multiradio wireless multihop networks are discussed

Abstract: Mobile communications is central to many military operations and is necessary to communicate simultaneously with multiple warfighters engaged in a common task. This paper describes the problem of routing and resource reservation in mobile mesh networks and presents architectural recommendations necessary for Internet protocols to operate effectively in these environments. A "mobile mesh" network is an autonomous system of mobile routers connected by wireless links, the union of which form an arbitrary graph. The routers are free to move randomly; thus, the network's wireless topology may change rapidly and unpredictably.

Abstract: Network coding is known to improve network throughput by mixing information from different flows and conveying more information in each transmission. Recently there have been some proposals for applying network coding to wireless mesh networks leveraging the broadcast nature of wireless transmissions. These approaches exploit coding opportunities passively while forwarding packets but they do not proactively change routing of flows to create more coding opportunities. In this paper, we attempt to investigate the extent of performance gain possible when routing decisions are made with the awareness of coding. We first define the expected number of coded transmissions for a successful exchange of packets between two nodes through an intermediate node. We then formulate optimal routing with coding, given the topology and traffic, as a linear programming problem. We conduct a preliminary evaluation of coding-aware routing and show that it offers significant gain particularly when there are many long distance flows.
