Abstract: A Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is a kind of wireless ad-hoc network, and is a self-configuring network of mobile routers (and associated hosts) connected by wireless links – the union of which forms an arbitrary topology. The routers are free to move randomly and organize themselves arbitrarily; thus, the network's wireless topology may change rapidly and unpredictably. Such a network may operate in a standalone fashion, or may be connected to the larger Internet.

TL;DR: This work presents a new mechanism called DARWIN (Distributed and Adaptive Reputation mechanism for Wireless ad hoc Networks), where it is proved that this mechanism is robust to imperfect measurements, is collusion-resistant and can achieve full cooperation among nodes.
Abstract: In wireless ad hoc networks one way to incentivize nodes to forward other nodes' packets is through the use of reputation mechanisms, where cooperation is induced by the threat of partial or total network disconnection if a node acts selfishly. The problem is that packet collisions and interference may make cooperative nodes appear selfish sometimes, generating unnecessary and unwanted punishments. With the use of a simple network model we first study the performance of some proposed reputation strategies and then present a new mechanism called DARWIN (Distributed and Adaptive Reputation mechanism for Wireless ad hoc Networks), where we try to avoid retaliation situations after a node is falsely perceived as selfish to help restore cooperation quickly. Using game theory, we prove that our mechanism is robust to imperfect measurements, is collusion-resistant and can achieve full cooperation among nodes. Simulations are presented to complement our theoretical analysis and evaluate the performance of our algorithm compared to other proposed reputation strategies.

TL;DR: A negotiation-based throughput maximization algorithm which adjusts the operating channel and power level among access points automatically, from a game-theoretical perspective is presented and it is shown that this algorithm converges to the optimal channel andPower assignment which yields the maximum overall throughput with arbitrarily high probability.
Abstract: This paper addresses the throughput maximization problem in wireless mesh networks. For the case of cooperative access points, we present a negotiation-based throughput maximization algorithm which adjusts the operating channel and power level among access points automatically, from a game-theoretical perspective. We show that this algorithm converges to the optimal channel and power assignment which yields the maximum overall throughput with arbitrarily high probability. Moreover, we analyze the scenario where access points belong to different regulation entities and hence non-cooperative. The long- term behavior and corresponding performance are investigated and the analytical results are verified by simulations.

TL;DR: In this article, a contention-based media access mechanism and self-allocating bandwidth within a wireless mesh network by dynamically modifying one or more contentionbased transmission control parameters is presented. But the routing nodes determine a hop count and adjust one ormore contention parameters based at least in part, on the hop count.
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to facilitating load balancing and bandwidth a) location in wireless mesh networks. Generally, according to one implementation of the present invention., routing nodes implement a contention-based media access mechanism and self-allocate bandwidth within a wireless mesh network by dynamically modifying one or more contention-based transmission control parameters. The routing nodes determine a hop count and adjust one or more contention parameters based at least in part, on the hop count.

TL;DR: An Ultraviolet-C (UVC) based portable water purification system employing a novel array of baffles increases the efficiency per unit energy of irradiating UVC light in the eradication of pathogens in the water as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An Ultraviolet-C (UVC) based portable water purification system employing a novel array of baffles increases the efficiency per unit energy of irradiating UVC light in the eradication of pathogens in the water. Closed loop feedback allows monitoring the application of UVC light power to ensure high levels of pathogen eradication. This system is capable of eradicating a wide range of waterborne bacteria, viruses, protozoa, helminthes, yeast, and mold found in natural freshwater sources worldwide. By adding pre- or post-filters, the system can remove harmful organic compounds, pesticides, inorganic compounds and heavy metals from the water. The system can also be used to eradicate pathogens in fluids other than water. As a feature of this invention, a communications systems that can reach geographically dispersed populations at low cost without the need to install costly wired communications infrastructure is combined with and powered by the water purification system. In one embodiment, a packet radio system is provided to create nodes in a wireless mesh communications system to provide voice, data, video and internet communications using an array of the water purifiers to create a wireless mesh network.
