TL;DR: A workflow specification language is designed that expresses new requirements for workflow executions and a run-time system for managing workflow executions while satisfying the new requirements is implemented.
Abstract: Workflow management systems (WFMSs) coordinate the execution of applications distributed over networks. In WFMSs, data inconsistencies can arise due to: the interaction between steps of concurrent threads within a workflow (intra-workflow coordination); the interaction between steps of concurrent workflows (inter-workflow coordination); and the presence of failures. Since these problems have not received adequate attention, this paper focuses on developing the necessary concepts and infrastructure to handle them. First, to deal with inter- and intra-workflow coordination requirements we have identified a set of high level building blocks. Secondly, to handle failures we propose a novel and pragmatic approach called opportunistic compensation and re-execution that allows a workflow designer to customize workflow recovery from correctness as well as performance perspectives. Thirdly based on these concepts we have designed a workflow specification language that expresses new requirements for workflow executions and implemented a run-time system for managing workflow executions while satisfying the new requirements. These ideas are geared towards improving the modeling and correctness properties offered by WFMSs and making them more robust and flexible.

TL;DR: A comparative overview of the degree of support for these patterns offered by state-of-the-art languages and tools is obtained, and an evaluation of the patterns from a usability perspective, as perceived by BPM practitioners are concluded.
Abstract: As a result of the growing adoption of Business Process Management (BPM) technology, different stakeholders need to understand and agree upon the process models that are used to configure BPM systems. However, BPM users have problems dealing with the complexity of such models. Therefore, the challenge is to improve the comprehension of process models. While a substantial amount of literature is devoted to this topic, there is no overview of the various mechanisms that exist to deal with managing complexity in (large) process models. As a result, it is hard to obtain an insight into the degree of support offered for complexity reducing mechanisms by state-of-the-art languages and tools. This paper focuses on complexity reduction mechanisms that affect the abstract syntax of a process model, i.e., the formal structure of process model elements and their interrelationships. These mechanisms are captured as patterns so that they can be described in their most general form, in a language- and tool-independent manner. The paper concludes with a comparative overview of the degree of support for these patterns offered by state-of-the-art languages and tools, and with an evaluation of the patterns from a usability perspective, as perceived by BPM practitioners.

TL;DR: This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of research on the application of logic-based methods to information systems, covering highly topical and emerging fields: XML programming and querying, intelligent agents, workflow modeling and verification, data integration, temporal and dynamic information, data mining, authorization, and security.
Abstract: In this era of heterogeneous and distributed data sources, ranging from semistructured documents to knowledge about coordination processes or workflows, logic provides a rich set of tools and techniques with which to address the questions of howto represent, query and reason about complex data. This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of research onthe application of logic-based methods to information systems, covering highly topical and emerging fields: XML programming and querying, intelligent agents, workflow modeling and verification, data integration, temporal and dynamic information, data mining, authorization, and security. It provides both scientists and graduate students with a wealth of material and references for their own research and education.

TL;DR: Results from the study suggest not only that RFID technology can assist in the measurement and ultimate control of workflow processes, but also that traditional and non-traditional IS practices are necessary for successful RFID implementation.
Abstract: Healthcare facilities face limited resources and expanding expenses. Emerging information technologies offer a means for healthcare to measure and control their resources and workflow processes, and ultimately improve patient care. The usefulness of one emerging information technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), is examined in a “proof of application” study conducted at a Level-1 trauma unit. Results from the study suggest not only that RFID technology can assist in the measurement and ultimate control of workflow processes, but also that traditional and non-traditional IS practices are necessary for successful RFID implementation. Lessons learned about the idiosyncrasies of RFID implementation and the cleansing and analysis of RFID-generated data are reported.
