TL;DR: Workflow management system and method with personal subflows as discussed by the authors includes a workflow definition including an activity to be performed by a personal subflow, and a decision agent cooperates with the server in the scheduling of work items by considering participant-provided data and a branch expression associated with a current personal sub-flow activity.
Abstract: Workflow management system and method with personal subflows. A workflow system includes a workflow definition including an activity to be performed by a personal subflow. The personal subflow is defined by personal subflow activities and branch expressions associated with the subflow activities. A server interprets the workflow definition and facilitates the scheduling and routing of work items in the system. A client receives work items from the server and displays information therefrom to a participant. The client also receives data and control commands from the participant. A decision agent cooperates with the server in the scheduling of work items by considering participant-provided data and a branch expression associated with a current personal subflow activity.

TL;DR: The proposed model provides a new way to model and manage teamwork processes and a reference model for coordinating the knowledge flow process with the workflow process is suggested to provide an integrated approach to model teamwork process.
Abstract: To realize effective knowledge sharing in teamwork, this paper proposes a knowledge flow model for peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and management in cooperative teams. The model consists of the concepts, rules and methods about the knowledge flow, the knowledge flow process model, and the knowledge flow engine. A reference model for coordinating the knowledge flow process with the workflow process is suggested to provide an integrated approach to model teamwork process. We also discuss the peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing paradigm in large-scale teams and propose the approach for constructing a knowledge flow network from the corresponding workflow. The proposed model provides a new way to model and manage teamwork processes.

TL;DR: This paper describes the architecture and implementation of a tool suite that enables exception analysis, prediction, and prevention of deviations from the desired or acceptable behavior and shows experimental results obtained by using the tool suite to analyze internal HP processes.
Abstract: Business process automation technologies are being increasingly used by many companies to improve the efficiency of both internal processes as well as of e-services offered to customers. In order to satisfy customers and employees, business processes need to be executed with a high and predictable quality. In particular, it is crucial for organizations to meet the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) stipulated with the customers and to foresee as early as possible the risk of missing SLAs, in order to set the right expectations and to allow for corrective actions. In this paper we focus on a critical issue in business process quality: that of analyzing, predicting and preventing the occurrence of exceptions, i.e., of deviations from the desired or acceptable behavior. We characterize the problem and propose a solution, based on data warehousing and mining t We then describe the architecture and implementation of a tool suite that enables exception analysis, prediction, and prevention. Finally, we show experimental results obtained by using the tool suite to analyze internal HP processes.

TL;DR: The concepts of workflow and production cycle open up a new horizon for integrating systems and software into what is called a distributed 'Teraflop-workbench' approach.
Abstract: High performance computing has gradually shifted from the realm of research into development and partially even into the production cycles of industry. High performance computers therefore have to be integrated into production environments that demand the simultaneous solution of multidisciplinary physics problems. Supercomputer centers can learn from these new challenges imposed by industry. The concepts of workflow and production cycle open up a new horizon for integrating systems and software into what is called a distributed 'Teraflop-workbench' approach. Terascale storage and communication infrastructures eventually needed to support such an environment.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analysis approach that uses so-called "anti-patterns" expressed in terms of a temporal logic to discover data-flow errors in workflows.
Abstract: Despite the abundance of analysis techniques to discover control-flow errors in workflow designs, there is hardly any support for data-flow verification. Most techniques simply abstract from data, while data dependencies can be the source of all kinds of errors. This paper focuses on the discovery of data-flow errors in workflows. We present an analysis approach that uses so-called "anti-patterns" expressed in terms of a temporal logic. Typical errors include accessing a data element that is not yet available or updating a data element while it may be read in a parallel branch. Since the anti-patterns are expressed in terms of temporal logic, the well-known, stable, adaptable, and effective model-checking techniques can be used to discover data-flow errors. Moreover, our approach enables a seamless integration of control flow and data-flow verification.
