TL;DR: The power of the 3d-transition metal K-pre-edge and rising-edge methodology development as an electronic structure determination technique and its impact in understanding the role of supporting ligands in tuning the electronic configuration of transition metal-O2 systems are demonstrated.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The combination of two metals in an oxide matrix can produce materials with novel physical and chemical properties as mentioned in this paper, and the reactivity of a series of cobalt and nickel molybdates (α-AMoOO4, β-amoO4 and ε-AMO4) has been shown to have high reactivity.

TL;DR: In this article, the exciton creation in Ge and Si by indirect and direct transitions has been obtained from high resolution absorption spectra, which is interpreted as being due to the formation of excitons and free electron-hole pairs.

TL;DR: In this article, the electronic properties of supported gold nanoparticles were determined using X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the gold LIII-edge.
Abstract: The electronic properties of supported gold nanoparticles were determined using X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the gold LIII-edge. The whiteline intensity decreased with decreasing particle size, suggesting that smaller particles contained more d electrons. No change in the whiteline intensity, however, was detected due to the support composition. Full-multiple scattering calculations show that hybridization of the s, p, and d orbitals in bulk gold created holes in the gold d band, transferring a small amount of 5d electron (and 6s electron) density to the 6p orbitals, leading to d electron counts smaller than 10 and a larger whiteline. Calculations for Au atoms with different gold−gold coordination numbers were consistent with the experimental XANES results, indicating that smaller particles have increased d electron density. In addition, the d band in smaller particles is narrower and shifted closer to the Fermi level. These results are consistent with the higher adsorption coverages...
