TL;DR: In this paper, a single-beam technique for measuring both the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient for a wide variety of materials is reported, including a comprehensive theoretical analysis.
Abstract: A sensitive single-beam technique for measuring both the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient for a wide variety of materials is reported. The authors describe the experimental details and present a comprehensive theoretical analysis including cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption. In these experiments, the transmittance of a sample is measured through a finite aperture in the far field as the sample is moved along the propagation path (z) of a focused Gaussian beam. The sign and magnitude of the nonlinear refraction are easily deduced from such a transmittance curve (Z-scan). Employing this technique, a sensitivity of better than lambda /300 wavefront distortion is achieved in n/sub 2/ measurements of BaF/sub 2/ using picosecond frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser pulses. >

TL;DR: Employing high-yield production of layered materials by liquid-phase exfoliation, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dispersions with large populations of single and few layers were prepared and exhibited significant saturable absorption (SA) for the femtosecond pulses.
Abstract: Employing high-yield production of layered materials by liquid-phase exfoliation, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dispersions with large populations of single and few layers were prepared. Electron microscopy verified the high quality of the two-dimensional MoS2 nanostructures. Atomic force microscopy analysis revealed that ∼39% of the MoS2 flakes had thicknesses of less than 5 nm. Linewidth and frequency difference of the E12g and A1g Raman modes confirmed the effective reduction of flake thicknesses from the bulk MoS2 to the dispersions. Ultrafast nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were investigated using an open-aperture Z-scan technique. All experiments were performed using 100 fs pulses at 800 nm from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. The MoS2 nanosheets exhibited significant saturable absorption (SA) for the femtosecond pulses, resulting in the third-order NLO susceptibility Imχ(3) ∼ 10–15 esu, figure of merit ∼10–15 esu cm, and free-carrier absorption cross section ∼10–17 cm2. Induced free carrier densi...

TL;DR: It is found that the nonlinear refractive index decreases with increasing excitation flux but slower than the absorption, suggesting that graphene may be a very promising nonlinear medium, paving the way for graphene-based nonlinear photonics.
Abstract: Under strong laser illumination, few-layer graphene exhibits both a transmittance increase due to saturable absorption and a nonlinear phase shift. Here, we unambiguously distinguish these two nonlinear optical effects and identify both real and imaginary parts of the complex nonlinear refractive index of graphene. We show that graphene possesses a giant nonlinear refractive index n2≃10−7 cm2 W−1, almost 9 orders of magnitude larger than bulk dielectrics. We find that the nonlinear refractive index decreases with increasing excitation flux but slower than the absorption. This suggests that graphene may be a very promising nonlinear medium, paving the way for graphene-based nonlinear photonics.

TL;DR: The measured Kerr nonlinearity is comparable in magnitude to the linear dispersion in a simple two-level system and is several orders of magnitude greater than the Kerr non linearity of a conventional three-level scheme under similar conditions.
Abstract: We report an experimental observation of large Kerr nonlinearity with vanishing linear susceptibilities in coherently prepared four-level rubidium atoms. Quantum coherence and interference manifested by electromagnetically induced transparency suppress the linear susceptibilities and greatly enhance the nonlinear susceptibilities at low light intensities. The measured Kerr nonlinearity is comparable in magnitude to the linear dispersion in a simple two-level system and is several orders of magnitude greater than the Kerr nonlinearity of a conventional three-level scheme under similar conditions.

TL;DR: The giant nonlinearity of WS2 and MoS2 films is attributed to a two-dimensional confinement, a giant exciton effect, and the band edge resonance of TPA.
Abstract: The optical nonlinearity of WS2 and MoS2 monolayer and few-layer films was investigated using the Z-scan technique with femtosecond pulses from the visible to the near-infrared range. The nonlinear absorption of few- and multilayer WS2 and MoS2 films and their dependences on excitation wavelength were studied. WS2 films with 1–3 layers exhibited a giant two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient as high as (1.0 ± 0.8) × 104 cm/GW. TPA saturation was observed for the WS2 film with 1–3 layers and for the MoS2 film with 25–27 layers. The giant nonlinearity of WS2 and MoS2 films is attributed to a two-dimensional confinement, a giant exciton effect, and the band edge resonance of TPA.
