Abstract: OBJECTIVE To study the plant hormones produced by 5 species of endophytic fungi isolated from medicinal plants and to illustrate the mechanism on endophytic fungi stimulating the growth of plants. METHODS Extracting plant hormones from mycelia and its culture solution with organic solvent, and detecting them by HPLC. RESULTS One or more plant hormones [GA3 (Gibberellin), IAA (Indoleacetic acid), ABA (Abscisic acid), Z (Zeatin), ZR (Zeatin riboside)] were detected from the mycelia and its culture solution. CONCLUSIONS The plant hormones produced by the endophytic fungi are important materials that may be used to reveal the mechanism of endophytic fungi stimulating the growth of medicinal plants (Orchidacea).

Abstract: Cotyledons excised from seedlings of Cajanus cajan (pigeonpea) were grown on media containing cytokinins (6-benzyladenine, zeatin, and zeatin riboside) and an allied compound, thidiazuron. With the exception of zeatin riboside, initial response in terms of induction of organized structures was very high. However, subsequent regeneration of shoots from cotyledon explants was very poor. Anatomical studies on the regenerating explants were undertaken to study the pattern of morphogenesis. Cytokinins and thidiazuron induced divisions in the epidermal and sub-epidermal cell layers leading to the formation of primary protrusions on the surface. This was followed by the development of foci of high meristematic activity either on the surface or within the primary protrusions. These foci differentiated into embryo-like structures or shoot meristem-like structures. Mostly aberrant shoots, with poorly developed apical meristems, regenerated from these structures.

Abstract: Endogenous levels of cytokinins in an anise cell culture were determined by the use of radioimmunoassay and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in combination with single-ion monitoring, during proembryonal and embryonal development. In both cultures the highest cytokinin levels were correlated with logarithmic growth (embryonal: isopentenyladenosine, 4 ng g-1 fresh weight [FW]; isopentenyladenine, 1.4 ng g-1 FW; zeatin, 3.6 ng g-1 FW; proembryonal: isopentenyladenosine, 58.3 ng g-1 FW; isopentenyladenine, 7.9 ng g-1 FW; zeatin 11.1 ng g-1 FW). The proembryonic culture medium but not the embryonic culture medium contained isopentenyladenosine up to 28 pg ml-1 during logarithmic growth. No correlation between different embryonic stages and the endogenous cytokinin level was obvious.

Abstract: We studied the effects of heavy metal salts (Pb(NO3)2, CuSO4, and ZnSO4) on phytohormonal status and sex expression in various cultivars of marijuana (Cannabis sativa L.), a dioecious plant, grown on Knop nutrient medium. Pb(NO3)2 and ZnSO4 were added to the medium at the concentration of 10−9 M, and CuSO4, at the concentration of 10−10 M. Plant were grown under controlled conditions at luminescent illumination, 22–24°C, and 80% humidity. The contents of GA and zeatin were determined by HPLC. Copper and zinc salts induced plant feminization, and this effect was coupled with zeatin accumulation. Lead salts favored plant masculinization coupled with GA accumulation. Thus, a shift in sex expression in marijuana plants was correlated with the heavy metal action on the balance of phytohormones, GA and zeatin.
