Large-Scale Fabrication of Boron Nitride Nanosheets and Their Utilization in Polymeric Composites with Improved Thermal and Mechanical Properties

Among the recent developments in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous layered coordination polymers (CPs) have garnered attention due to their modular nature and tunable structures. These factors enable a number of properties and applications, including gas and guest sorption, storage and separation of gases and small molecules, catalysis, luminescence, sensing, magnetism, and energy storage and conversion. Among MOFs, two-dimensional (2D) compounds are also known as 2D CPs or 2D MOFs. Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, 2D materials have also been widely studied. Several 2D MOFs are suitable for exfoliation as ultrathin nanosheets similar to graphene and other 2D materials, making these layered structures useful and unique for various technological applications. Furthermore, these layered structures have fascinating topological networks and entanglements. This review provides an overview of different aspects of 2D MOF layered architectures such as topology, interpenetration, structural transformations, properties, and applications.

Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Materials: Synthesis, Structures, Properties and Applications.

Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) are promising two-dimensional materials to boost the mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties of polymer nanocomposites. Yet, BNNS-polymer composites face many challenges to meet the desired properties owing to agglomeration of BNNSs, incompatibility, and weak interactions of BNNSs with the host polymers. This work systematically reviews the fundamental parameters that control the molecular interactions of BNNSs with polymer matrices. The surface modification of BNNSs, as well as size, dispersion, and alignment of these nanosheets have a profound effect on polymer chain dynamics, mass barrier properties, and stress-transfer efficiency of the nanocomposites.

The bio-based products can provide a solution to the problems associated with petroleum shortages and waste treatment. Nanocellulose development has raised massive interest for a variety of applications pertinent to the material engineering to biomedical fields due to its biodegradable nature, impressive optical properties, anisotropic shape, high mechanical strength, excellent biocompatibility and tailorable surface chemistry. The nanocellulose composites show improved properties compared to other biopolymers due to their high surface area and large aspect ratio of nanoparticles. In this review, a clear overview of nanocellulose extraction, structural properties, sources and their applications in versatile fields are discussed. The foreseen markets of nanocellulose products can be categorised into different levels namely low-end, mid-range and high-end applications. An interdisciplinary research is essential to commercialize nanocellulose based products for sustainable applications.

Nanocellulose-based products for sustainable applications-recent trends and possibilities

Composites (or complex materials) are formed from two or many constituent materials with novel physical or chemical characteristics when integrated. The individual components can be combined to create a unique composite material through mechanical transfer, physical stacking, exfoliation, derivative chemical mixtures, mixtures of solid solutions, or complex synthesis processes. The development of new composites based on emerging 2D nanomaterials has allowed for outstanding achievements with novel applications that were previously unknown. These new composite materials show massive potential in emerging applications due to their exceptional properties, such as being strong, light, cheap, and highly photodegradable, and their ability to be used for water splitting and energy storage compared to traditional materials. The blend of existing polymers and 2D materials with their nanocomposites has proven to be immediate solutions to energy and food scarcity in the world. Although much literature has been reported in the said context, we tried to provide an understanding about the relationship of their mechanisms and scope for future application in a comprehensive way. In this review, we briefly summarize the basic characteristics, novel physical and chemical behaviors, and new applications in the industry of the emerging 2D-material-based composites.

Representative 2D-material-based nanocomposites and their emerging applications: a review

Polymers have been widely used for their low density, low cost, corrosion resistance, easy design, and processing. The addition of nanomaterials into polymer matrices has been studied for a long history due to their enhancement on properties of polymers, such as the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Two-dimensional materials, a new class of nanomaterials, have been intensively studied as a filler for polymer composites in recent years, which can significantly enhance the performance at even extremely small loading. In this review, firstly, the preparing and modifying method of 2D materials, such as graphene, graphene oxide, and hexagonal boron nitride, as a filler for polymer composites are organized. The related dispersion methods of 2D materials in the polymers, surface treatments of 2D materials, interface bonding between 2D materials and polymers are discussed alongside. Secondly, the applications of 2D materials/polymer composites for energy storage in lithium ion battery separators and supercapacitors are summarized. Finally, we have concluded the challenges in preparing 2D materials/polymer composites, and future perspectives for using this class of new composites have also been discussed.
