Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the X–ray structural analyses of organomagnesium compounds. Organomagnesium compounds are well-established tools in organic chemistry. Compared to the long history of the synthetic applications of organomagnesium compounds, the investigation of their structure and bonding covers a much shorter period. By the use of gas-phase electron diffraction (GED), it is possible to determine the structure of molecules in the gas phase. A major drawback of GED is that only small molecules can be resolved completely; for larger molecules, the degrees of freedom must be limited during the calculations by assuming and optimizing values for many of the structural parameters. In almost all structure determinations of simple Grignard or diorganylmagnesium compounds, the magnesium atoms are surrounded by four ligands. In the absence of coordinating solvents such as ethers, most organomagnesium compounds tend to form polymeric structures. Solid and volatile organomagnesium compounds can be slowly sublimed in a static high vacuum. On the symmetrization of di-Grignard reagents to the analogous halogen-free compounds, both polymeric and cyclic species may be expected. Although the tetrahedral coordination geometry is preferred by organomagnesium compounds, many examples have been structurally characterized, which show deviating coordination numbers. Increased coordination numbers for magnesium are also found for an ethylmagnesium-chloride/magnesium-chloride adduct. Fascinating structures can be obtained on the complexation of organomagnesium compounds with polyether ligands.

Catalytic Synthesis of Organolithium and Organomagnesium Compounds and of Lithium and Magnesium Hydrides—Applications in Organic Synthesis and Hydrogen Storage

Praktisch alle Hauptgruppen- und Nebengruppenmetalle sind zur Metall-Metall-Bindung befahigt. Der Bindungsgrad reicht von schwacher Wechselwirkung bis zur Vierfachbindung, die Aggregation vom zweikernigen Gebilde bis zur Raumnetzstruktur. Trotz zahlreicher physikalischer Untersuchungen last sich die Art der Metall-Metall-Bindung noch nicht in jeder Hinsicht verstehen. Die Fahigkeit der Metall-Metall-verknupften Mehrkernkomplexe, als Reservoir fur fehlende oder uberschussige Elektronen zu dienen, erlaubt Reaktionen sowohl mit nucleophilen oder reduzierenden als auch mit elektrophilen oder oxidierenden Reagentien. Die Stellung der Cluster zwischen den einfachen Komplexen und den reinen Metallen hat theoretische wie praktische Bedeutung.

Was wissen wir über die Metall‐Metall‐Bindung?

Als eine der neueren Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der homogenen Katalyse gelten Katalysatoren, die die Umsetzung von 1-Alkenen zu Alkenyllithium-Verbindungen und Lithiumhydrid sowie die Hydrierung von Lithium und Magnesium unter milden Bedingungen ermoglichen. Katalytisch erzeugtes Magnesiumhydrid ist hochreaktiv; es last sich katalytisch an 1-Alkene zu Diorganomagnesium-Verbindungen addieren und kann unter anderem zur Synthese von Silan und „aktivem Magnesium” angewendet werden. Die Wasserstoffspeicherung in Form von Metallhydriden wird erortert. Die Hydrier-/Dehydrierversuche ergaben, das sich katalytisch hergestelltes Magnesiumhydrid (mit oder ohne Dotierung mit Fremdmetallen) als Hochtemperatur-Wasserstoffspeicher eignet.

The mechanisms of new catalytic reactions leading to the formation of di-, and tri-alkyl phosphates, di- and tri-alkyl phosphites, phosphoramidites, phosphazenes, phosphines, and phosphine oxides from hydrogen, copper, and zinc phosphides and white and red phosphorus are analysed. The mechanisms of the activation of the reactants by metal complexes and of the reactions involving the oxidative P?O, P?N, and P?C coupling of organic compounds to phosphorus and phosphides are considered. The bibliography includes 124 references.
