The present invention relates to simultaneous computer screen and voice monitoring from a remote location, and particularly relates to synchronized telephone and screen monitoring of a computer workstation from a remote location. Such monitoring is useful for providing training and assistance to those using such workstations, especially in connection with telephone use, can also be useful for providing an audit trial of significant on-screen events, or can be used as a trigger to initiate other separate events. In one embodiment, graphics primitives are used to determine localized screen changes which are periodically copied from the monitored workstation desktop and sent over a network to a remote, monitoring, workstation. In another embodiment, localized screen changes are determined by full screen comparison, and sent over a network to a remote, monitoring, workstation.

Data exchanged between at least one server and at least one user is intercepted in a capturing module that operates independently from the server and the user. A copy of the intercepted data is stored in a database. The intercepted data that is destined for the server is forwarded to the server, or the intercepted data that is destined for the user is forwarded to the user. The intercepting and storing are performed transparently to the user. Interception of data may be performed continuously, and storing of data may be performed during a predetermined time window or at predetermined time intervals. The intercepted data may include events, attributes, images, user identifications, requests, and/or responses. Only a predetermined portion of the data and/or data that satisfies predefined rules is stored. The user may be a web server or a web browser, and the server may be a web server. The data may be exchanged in the form of an Internet protocol and assembled into a web page view for the user. Interception and storing may be performed concurrently for capturing data exchanged simultaneously between a plurality of servers and the user, the server and a plurality of users, or a plurality of servers and a plurality of users.

The QUIZIT system has been developed to support adaptive as well as standard testing, along with automatic grading and record keeping, using the WWW as a delivery vehicle. In connection with our Interactive Learning with a Digital Library in Computer Science project, we have applied QUIZIT to help with a master's level course as well as a large freshman level service course. Preliminary testing has led to various improvements, and it appears that QUIZIT will be well received by both instructors and students. It should port easily to a variety of environments and so could be widely used at other institutions as well.

Events associated with recorded data exchanged between at least one user and at least one server are presented to a user. A set of events associated with the recorded data is defined, and each event within the set is represented by an event identifier, e.g., a time stamp. Each event identifier is associated with portions of the recorded data that correspond to the event represented by the event identifier. An event is selected for presentation by selecting the event identifier associated with a portion of the data that corresponds to that event.

Method and system for presenting events associated with recorded data exchanged between a server and a user

We propose NCE, an efficient algorithm to identify and extract relevant content from news webpages. We define relevant as the textual sections that more objectively describe the main event in the article. This includes the title and the main body section, and excludes comments about the story and presentation elements. Our experiments suggest that NCE is competitive, in terms of extraction quality, with the best methods available in the literature. It achieves F1 = 90.7% in our test corpus containing 324 news webpages from 22 sites. The main advantages of our method are its simplicity and its computational performance. It is at least an order of magnitude faster than methods that use visual features. This characteristic is very suitable for applications that process a large number of pages.

A fast and simple method for extracting relevant content from news webpages

In distance learning and self-paced instruction, student evaluation with prompt feedback has always been a critical issue. Instructors and teaching assistants are often confronted with scores of e-mail messages per day from students, the need to work night and day to grade exams, and heavy workloads late in the term. This paper describes the design of an automatic evaluation system that aims to eliminate some of the workload on instructors, by providing a convenient way of authoring interactive quizzes while addressing issues of reuse, portability and immediate feedback to students. We build on the standard models of Computer-based Training (CBT) and Web-based Training (WBT) systems, showing how we can combine their best features and overcome some of their problems, keeping in mind the specific requirements of our educational environment.
