Principles and Practices of Interconnection Networks

The authors develop a formal group-theoretic model, called the Cayley graph model, for designing, analyzing, and improving such networks. They show that this model is universal and demonstrate how interconnection networks can be concisely represented in this model. It is shown that this model enables the authors to design networks based on representations of finite groups. They can then analyze these networks by interpreting the group-theoretic structure graph theoretically, Using these ideas, and motivated by certain well-known combinatorial problems, they develop two classes of networks called star graphs and pancake graphs. A group-theoretic model for symmetric interconnection networks

An interconnection pattern of processing elements, the cube-connected cycles (CCC), is introduced which can be used as a general purpose parallel processor. Because its design complies with present technological constraints, the CCC can also be used in the layout of many specialized large scale integrated circuits (VLSI). By combining the principles of parallelism and pipelining, the CCC can emulate the cube-connected machine and the shuffle-exchange network with no significant degradation of performance but with a more compact structure. We describe in detail how to program the CCC for efficiently solving a large class of problems that include Fast Fourier transform, sorting, permutations, and derived algorithms.

VLSI communication networks are wire-limited, i.e. the cost of a network is not a function of the number of switches required, but rather a function of the wiring density required to construct the network. Communication networks of varying dimensions are analyzed under the assumption of constant wire bisection. Expressions for the latency, average case throughput, and hot-spot throughput of k-ary n-cube networks with constant bisection that agree closely with experimental measurements are derived. It is shown that low-dimensional networks (e.g. tori) have lower latency and higher hot-spot throughput than high-dimensional networks (e.g. binary n-cubes) with the same bisection width. >

Performance analysis of k-ary n-cube interconnection networks

This paper explores the possibility of using a large-scale array of microprocessors as a computational facility for the execution of massive numerical computations with a high degree of parallelism. By microprocessor we mean a processor realized on one or a few semiconductor chips that include arithmetic and logical facilities and some memory. The current state of LSI technology makes this approach a feasible and attractive candidate for use in a macrocomputer facility.
