Recent advances in shape–memory polymers: Structure, mechanism, functionality, modeling and applications

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) belong to a class of smart polymers, which have drawn considerable research interest in last few years because of their applications in microelectromechanical systems, actuators, for self healing and health monitoring purposes, and in biomedical devices. Like in other fields of applications, SMP materials have been proved to be suitable substitutes to metallic ones because of their flexibility, biocompatibility and wide scope of modifications. The shape memory properties of SMPs polymers might surpass those of shape memory metallic alloys (SMAs). In addition to block copolymers, polymers blends and interpenetrating network structured SMP systems have been developed. The present review mainly highlights the recent progress in synthesis, characterization, evaluation, and proposed applications of SMPs and related composites.

Recent advances in shape memory polymers and composites : a review

The past several years have witnessed significant advances in the field of shape memory polymers (SMPs) with the elucidation of new compositions for property tuning, the discovery of new mechanisms for shape fixing and recovery, and the initiation of phenomenological modeling. We critically review research findings on new shape memory polymers along these lines, emphasizing exciting progress in the areas of composites, novel recovery triggering, and new application developments.

The effect of hard segment ordering in copolyurethane elastomers obtained by using simultaneously two types of diisocyanates

Mechanical response of dibenzyl-based polyurethanes with diol chain extension

The reactivity of the 2,2′-, 2,4′-, 4,4′-dibenzyldiisocyanate (2,2′-, 2,4′-, 4,4′-DBDI) with n-butanol in benzene has been studied. The concentrations of all species were monitored by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The reactivity of 4,4′-DBDI is similar to that of 4,4′-diphenylmethanediisocyanate (4,4′-MDI). Very strong intramolecular catalytic effects were noticed in the case of 2,2′-DBDI, probably due to the variable molecular geometry. These effects are responsible for the whole reaction pattern. The 2,4′-DBDI NCO ortho and para groups reactivities are different and comparable to that of 2,4-toluylenediisocyanate (2,4-TDI).
