The identification of geographical distribution of a plant species is crucial for understanding the importance of environmental variables affecting plant habitat. In the present study, the spatial potential distribution of Astragalus fasciculifolius Boiss. as a key specie was mapped using maximum entropy (Maxent) as data mining technique and bivariate statistical model (FR: frequency ratio) in marl soils of southern Zagros, Iran. The A. fasciculifolius locations were identified and recorded by intensive field campaigns. Then, localities points were randomly split into a 70% training dataset and 30% for validation. Two climatic, four topographic, and eight edaphic variables were used to model the A. fasciculifolius distribution and its habitat potential. Maps of environmental variables were generated using Geographic Information System (GIS). Next, the habitat suitability index (HSI) maps were produced and classified by means of Maxent and FR approaches. Finally, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC-ROC) curve was used to compare the performance of maps produced by Maxent and FR models. The interpretation of environmental variables revealed that the climatic and topographic parameters had less impact compared to edaphic variables in habitat distribution of A. fasciculifolius. The results showed that bulk density, nitrogen, acidity (pH), sand, and electrical conductivity (EC) of soil are the most significant variables that affect distribution of A. fasciculifolius. The validation of results showed that AUC values of Maxent and FR models are 0.83 and 0.76, respectively. The habitat suitability map by the better model (Maxent) showed that areas with high and very high suitable classes cover approximately 22% of the study area. Generally, the habitat suitability map produced using Maxent model could provide important information for conservation planning and a reclamation project of the degraded habitat of intended plant species. The distribution of the plants identifies the water, soil, and nutrient resources and affects the fauna distribution, and this is why it is relevant to research and to understand the plant distribution to properly improve the management and to achieve a sustainable management.

Maxent Data Mining Technique and Its Comparison with a Bivariate Statistical Model for Predicting the Potential Distribution of Astragalus Fasciculifolius Boiss. in Fars, Iran

This study aimed to investigate the main autecological characteristics of Desmostachya bipinnata L. (Poaceae) in a hyper-arid region. The study was carried out on Sistan plain, south-eastern Iran. The habitats of D. bipinnata were identified and then the climatic and edaphic characteristics of habitats were determined. Phenological stages, reproduction, root system, and nutritive and preference values of D. bipinnata were also studied. One single habitat of D. bipinnata was identified on Sistan plain. Average annual rainfall and temperature of the habitat were 60 mm and 21.8 °C, respectively. Loamy and loamy sand soils of the habitat had EC and pH values of 10-60 DS/m and 8.03-8.31, respectively. Secondary roots of D. bipinnata penetrated up to 2 m depth in soil. Mean canopy cover was 21.3% in the habitat. Vegetative growth started in the middle of February followed by flowering in May and seed ripening in July. Crude protein content of leaves and stems was 7.56% and 6.71% during vegetative growth, respectively. For both sheep and goats, D. bipinnata had a similar preference value of 25%. This species, with high resistance to unfavourable conditions, can be used for rehabilitation of desertified rangeland in hyper-arid regions.

The autecological characteristics of Desmostachya bipinnata in hyper-arid regions

Understory vegetation as an indicator of soil characteristics in the Hyrcanian area, N. Iran

La presente etude porte tout d’abord sur la mesure de l’activite antimicrobienne de 42 plantes medicinales qui sont utilisees traditionnellement en Iran et en Guadeloupe, contre 36 souches microbiennes resistantes a de multiples drogues afin de selectionner la plante la plus interessante. Les resultats obtenus revelent la presence des principes actifs antimicrobiens dans chacune des plantes.Nous avons finalement selectionne Hyptis atrorubens Poit. qui presente une forte activite antimicrobienne. De plus, cette plante n’a jamais ete etudiee dans la litterature. Des analyses phytochimiques et biologiques sur l’extrait hydro-methanolique des tiges, nous ont permis de trouver pour la premiere fois les quatre principaux composes actifs de cette plante : acide rosmarinique, rosmarinate de methyle, quercetine-3-glucoside (isoquercetine) et quercetine-3-galactoside (hyperoside). L’activite antibacterienne de ces composes a ete evaluee par differentes valeurs microbiologiques (CMI, CMB, synergie, denombrement bacterien et courbes de croissance). La meilleure activite inhibitrice et bactericide a ete trouvee pour le rosmarinate de methyle (0,3 mg/ml). Cette recherche suggere la forte potentialite d’activite antimicrobienne pour la combinaison de quatre composes avec une CMI de 70 µg/ml, qui s’approche de la CMI des antibiotiques.Ce travail presente les composes d’Hyptis atrorubens Poit. comme etant de nouveaux agents antimicrobiens et comme etant une source potentielle de lutte contre les bacteries, de plus en plus resistantes aux antibiotiques.

Evaluation biologique et phytochimique des substances naturelles d’Hyptis atrorubens Poit. (Lamiaceae), sélectionnée par un criblage d'extraits de 42 plantes

Stachys pilifera is an endemic plant to Iran. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of some habitat characteristics on the distribution of S. pilifera using the BMLR model in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, Iran. Tow transects were randomly established in each region. 10 quadrats sized 1 x 1 m2 were established along the transect. In each plot, canopy cover (%) of S. pilifera was recorded. 25 soil samples were gathered in the region to evaluate soil characteristics. The associated pixel of each plot was extracted and added to a prepared spreadsheet of a field database. The data gathered from experiments were fed into the computer item by item according to their own values. To determine the effect of environmental factors on the distribution of S. pilifera species, the researchers run a set of backward multiple linear regressions. The results of MLR to investigate the significance of was not significant (P-Value >0.05). Then the most insignificant term in the first run (silt) is removed and the operation run again. After removing silt, the results of the BMLR model are seen by considering the effect of other factors, and some of terms are insignificant again. The process is continued step by step to the point that there are only significant terms. Results showed that the effects of rain, sand, P, Fe, Zn, Mn, and evaporation on the distribution of S. pilifera species were significant.
