The integration of digital library services in blended learning environments: a Malaysian higher education perspective

Philology studies are often associated with traditional methods of teaching and learning. This study explores the possibility of e-learning adoption amongst Malay manuscripts learning community. The Soft System Methodology (SSM) is used to guide the investigation. SSM emphasises on understanding the problem situations faced by Malay manuscript learning community and expresses the situations in rich pictures. The manuscript learning community comprises lecturers, students and researchers in the field of philology. Data were gathered from interviews, focus group discussions and observations. Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya is the case study setting, focusing on lecturers who teach and students who enrol in a philology course as well as doctoral students researching on manuscript studies. The findings highlight problems faced by the various stakeholders and propose solutions in the form of a conceptual model for a collaborative electronic platform to improve teaching and learning as well as utilizing digitized manuscript surrogates held in a digital library of Malay manuscripts.

Exploring the needs of malay manuscript studies community for an e-learning platform

In this paper, a hybrid of Boyer Moore and Rule Based System are introduced for library book information on mobile application. A hybrid approach is employed as solution to replace the Digital Resource, Web based Software System and Catalogue. Quick Response (QR) Code is an improvement to replace the barcode and it can access any sensor on mobile application. The methodology of this paper is to develop Library Book Information to be more effective and by combining Boyer Moore String Matching and Rule Based System. From the phase of Boyer Moore and Rule Based System, these are greatly simplified this system by using QR Code to get data in a real time. The result in Boyer Moore and Rule Based System shows with highest priority or threshold (maximum) to minimum. It can be concluded that the hybrid of Boyer Moore and Rule Based System can effectively support the library information system.

Hybrid of Boyer Moore and Rule based System for Mobile Library Book Information

Nowadays, Digital Libraries have an inescapable role on delivering information resources to their users and new trends in Digital Libraries are to change from the passive state of only providing information resources to their users to a more active state by enabling the users of Digital Library to collaborate and share knowledge with each other. This study addresses the situation of postgraduate students, whom are only limited to scholarly Digital Libraries or graduated studentsâ€Ÿ thesis repository to conduct their research, by proposing the Personal Digital Library (PDL) Prototype with functionality to support research collaboration. In this dissertation the following objectives can be realized: (a) To indentify the required services and technologies to support research collaboration through Personal Digital Library; (b) To suggest the prototype of Personal Digital Library (PDL) with ability to support research collaboration; (c) To develop proposed Personal Digital Library (PDL) prototype; (d) To evaluate the usability of developed prototype of Personal Digital Library (PDL). This study adopts multiple data collection techniques that incorporate (a) survey on available systems and models of Personal Digital Libraries; (b) close-ended with follow-up open-ended survey on postgraduate studentsâ€Ÿ research behavior and requirements; (c) The survey questionnaire, utilized from Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SUMI), to evaluate the usability of prototype. The Web Site Design Method (WSDM) is employed to develop the Personal Digital Library Prototype. The developed prototype incorporates convenient content management and resource sharing with ability to integrate social network, activity awareness and usersâ€Ÿ interaction. The studentsâ€Ÿ responses indicate the developed prototype is perceived useful.

This paper reports on the user evaluation to examine participants’ acceptance of an e-workspace that has been developed to support the process of teaching, learning and researching manuscripts in the Malay manuscript community. This evaluation is conducted to answer the following research question: a) What is the perceived usefulness of the e-workspace in supporting transliteration workand collaboration from the Malay manuscript community? b) What are the usability issues highlighted regarding the Malay manuscript e-workspace? The evaluation is carried out based on five usability dimensions, namely, efficiency, effectiveness, engagement, error tolerance and ease of learning. A single case study has been employed in this evaluation which included lecturers, students, and researchers from the Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya as participants. These participantsare directly involved in teaching, learning and researching Malay manuscripts. The user evaluation is carried out in two phases. The first phase involves a task-based approach where participants are given several tasks to perform while using the e-workspace. The second phase is afocus group discussion to elicit the participants’ feedback on the perceived usefulness of the eworkspace after they have completed the given tasks. System evaluation of the Malay Manuscript eworkspace in serving the manuscript community has been reflected by the positive feedback fromthe 19 participants. The findings signify a positive reaction from participants towards the eworkspace. The e-workspace in general has been perceived as useful to support teaching, learning and researching manuscripts by providing a collaborative platform to conduct transliteration work electronically.

Malay philologists’ acceptance of an e-workspace to support teaching, learning and researching manuscripts

This paper describes the digital library of historical resources, a research project which involves building a testbed for the purpose of developing and testing new collaborative digital library functionality and presents an initial analysis of the digital library's public use on the web. The digital library is modeled to focus on serving secondary students information needs in conducting history projects. As such, in the implementation of the digital library, the use of online resources would be an integral part of history project based learning activities. Students should be enabled to access digital resources, create and publish their own documents in the digital library and share them with others. As a testbed system, the collaborative digital library known as CoreDev has demonstrated its capabilities in serving an educational community as has been reflected by the positive feedback on the functional requirements from 44 users. Over 75% of the respondents in the user survey considered themselves capable of using the digital library easily. The beta tester demographics (n = 105) indicate that the digital library is reaching its target communities.
