Synthesis of an intermetallic compound based on Ti 5 Si 3 by an explosive compaction of elemental powders was studied with the detonation velocity as the main experimental variable. Prior to the explosion experiment, a computer simulation of the compaction process was conducted by using the DYNA program, and the result was utilized in designing the experiment. The relative density of the compacted compound increased with the detonation velocity. To enhance the density of the compound further, however, it was necessary to adjust other variables associated with the can, powder, and the backup tube. From an X-ray diffraction analysis of the explosion-compacted compound, it was confirmed that formation of the Ti 5 Si 3 phase was complete. Although there is a room for further improvement of the density and the crack resistance of the compacted alloy, the present work verified that explosion synthesis is a potentially viable method to consolidate intermetallic compounds.

This paper investigates the use of a simple drop weight instrumented impact loading facility to produce metal powder compacts with better qualities than attained by the conventional means. Experiments were performed on Fe powder, Fe-C-Cu-Mn powder mix, and Cu-Zn powder mix at different height to diameter ratios and compacted at different energies. The overall density, density variation within the compact, dimensional accuracy, and microstructure were compared with quasistatic specimens compacted using conventional hydraulic press. The results showed that the dynamic compaction specimens attained better densification and dimensional accuracy than quasistatic compaction specimens.

Direct explosive compaction of powder is a process that is not widely exploited. It has been investigated by several workers. The mechanisms proposed were based on the fact that the energy developed by the explosive promotes compaction by (a) the kinetic energy acquired by the container or (b) the pressure transmitted by the container. The relevant parameters used for these explanations were either R 1, weight of explosive/weight of container, or R 2, weight of explosive/weight of powder to be compacted. Experiments using iron and copper powders and tubular containers of different internal diameter (i.d.) show that direct explosive powder compaction cannot be explained by only one parameter.
