Summary: The use of lignocellulosic fibers, pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) and sisal as reinforcements in thermoplastic and thermosetting resins for developing low cost and lightweight composites is an emerging field of research in polymer science and technology. Although, these biofibers have several advantages, such as low densities, low cost, nonabrasive nature, high filling level possible, low energy consumption, high specific properties, biodegradability, etc., over synthetic fibers, the absorption of moisture by untreated biofibers, poor wettability, and insufficient adhesion between the polymer matrix and fiber deteriorate the mechanical properties of composites made up of these biofibers. Therefore, the modification of these fibers is a key area of research at present to obtain optimum fiber-matrix properties. This review article is concerned with the structure, composition and properties of PALF and sisal, the chemical modifications of these fibers and PALF/sisal-reinforced thermosets, thermoplastics, rubber, cement, hybrids and biocomposites.

In this work, the effect of the two most used fiber treatments: acetylation and alkaline-treatment and its variables: time and temperature for one constant concentration of catalyst, on the final properties of MaterBi-Y/sisal fiber composites was studied. It was demonstrated that this kind of treatments leads to several morphological changes like voids creation and fiber fibrillation. Acetylation for 1 h is an acceptable option when lower water uptake amount is let or high impact energy is required. On the other hand, alkaline treatment for two days at room temperature and 5% w/v NaOH leads to the highest flexural properties with high impact performance and low changes in the water uptake amount.

The effects of acetylation on the structure and properties of acetylated sunhemp fibres were studied by scanning electron mic- roscopy, tensile testing and IR techniques. Acetylation did not af- fect the tensile strength much, but smoothened the fibre surface and reduced hygroscopicity. /' Sunhemp fibre is a ligno-cellulosic fibre. Production, chemical constituents and uses of sunhemp fibre are reported in our previous papers+", It has been ob- served that the cement or polymer composites made by sunhemp fibres pose a great problem of moisture absorptionv .Recently, wehavereported the effect of some inorganic nitrogen-based compounds on fire retardancy of sunhemp fibre. In literature it has been reported that hydroxyl groups can be acetylated by common organic molecules 5-7. Sunhemp fibre can al- so be acetylated by a simple and quick process report- ed earlier". In this paper, we have tried acetylation of sunhemp fibre by a previously reported method? for making this fibre moisture-proof. The effect of acetylation on the surface of sunhemp fibre was investigated. The tensile strength of the acetylated fibres and infrared (IR) spectra of raw as well as acetylated fibres are re- ported here. The sunhemp fibre was obtained from Jabalpur re- gion w~th.the help of Khadi and Village Industries COmmISSIOn. The sunhemp fibre (9 g) was soaked in glacial acetic acid for 1 hat 25-35°C, decanted and then soaked in acetic anhydride (50 ml), containing two drops of cone. sulphuric acid, for 5 min. The fibre was filtered over a butchner funnel and washed with water till it was free from acid, and dried in air for 24 h.
