Student Price Response in Higher Education: The Student Demand Studies.

The objectives of this study were to review the current literature on status attainment and student college choice and to develop and test a structural model of predisposition to attend college. Family and student background characteristics, parents’ educational expectations for students, level of student involvement in school, and student achievement were cited as influences on students’ predisposition toward postsecondary education and were the chief components of the model. Data from 2,497 ninth-grade students and their parents were used to test the model using LISREL. Parents’ expectations exerted the strongest influence throughout the model. Parents’ education, student gender, high school GPA, and high school experiences also contributed significantly in explaining students’ aspirations.

Family and High School Experience Influences on the Postsecondary Educational Plans of Ninth-Grade Students

This study expands earlier research on student demand theory by examining the relationship between tuition prices, state grants, and public college enrollment in the 50 states from 1976 to 1994. It emphasizes differences in enrollment behavior among Asian
 American, Black, Hispanic, and White students, as well as among college 
sectors; from its results, the author establishes policy recommendations 
for states to improve equality of access to public higher education in 
this country.

The Effects of Tuition and State Financial Aid on Public College Enrollment

Access to higher education has increasingly become a major priority for state and federal policy-makers. Mixtures of student financial aid and low tuition have increasingly been viewed as the means for equalizing access to and choice among institutions of higher education. This paper reviews the recent empirical evidence on the impact of price changes on individual demand for higher education. The evidence suggests that both low tuition and student grants do stimulate increases in enrollment. However, the student aid induced enrollment response is relatively low and the cost per additional student attracted to higher education may be very high.

Individual Demand for Higher Education: A Review and Analysis of Recent Empirical Studies

Based upon human capital theory, an enrollment model for higher education is formulated with demand being subject to nonprice rationing by academic admission standards. Cross-sectional differences in student enrollment are related to variables representing both demand factors and supply-side constraints. Two questionnaire surveys - Project Talent's national cross-sectional sample in the early 1960s and a recent survey of 4,000 high school seniors in the Boston SMSA - provide sufficient data to test the theoretical hypothesis derived. At both levels of aggregation, strong structural relationships between college attendance and socioeconomic status emerge. Stratifying the on-going group by socioeconomic quartiles yields insights into the distributional aspects of higher education enrollment.
