Solid-state transformer (SST) is an emerging technology integrating with a transformer power electronics converters and control circuitry. This paper comprehensively reviews the SST topologies suitable for different voltage levels and with varied stages, their control operation, and different trends in applications. The paper discusses various SST configurations with their design and characteristics to convert the input to output under unipolar and bipolar operation. A comparison between the topologies, control operation and applications are included. Different control models and schemes are explained. Potential benefits of SST in many applications in terms of controllability and the synergy of AC and DC systems are highlighted to appreciate the importance of SST technologies. This review highlights many factors including existing issues and challenges and provides recommendations for the improvement of future SST configuration and development.

State of the art of solid-state transformers: Advanced topologies, implementation issues, recent progress and improvements

This paper presents a bibliographical survey of the work carried out to date on the solid state transformer (SST). The paper provides a list of references that cover most work related to this device and a short discussion about several aspects. The sections of the paper are respectively dedicated to summarize configurations and control strategies for each SST stage, the work carried out for optimizing the design of high-frequency transformers that could adequately work in the isolation stage of a SST, the efficiency of this device, the various modelling approaches and simulation tools used to analyze the performance of a SST (working a component of a microgrid, a distribution system or just in a standalone scenario), and the potential applications that this device is offering as a component of a power grid, a smart house, or a traction system.

Modelling and real-time simulation of a modular bidirectional solid-state transformer for ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles

This paper proposes the modeling and control of a Solid-State Transformer built using a three stage conversion topology. First, a rectification stage is used, where a three-phase high-voltage AC signal is converted to a DC level; this stage is then followed by a DC-DC converter, and finally an inverter is used to convert the DC into a three-phase low-voltage AC signal. The adopted topology is modeled by using a simplified model for each stage, useful to design their controllers. Based on these models, the controllers are tuned to obtain a good performance to sudden load changes. This performance is tested through simulations.
