The acquisition of electroencephalograms (EEG) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments raises important practical issues of patient safety. The presence of electrical wires connected to the patient in rapidly changing magnetic fields results in currents flowing through the patient due to induced electromotive forces (EMF), by three possible mechanisms: fixed loop in rapidly changing gradient fields; fixed loop in a RF electromagnetic field; moving loop in the static magnetic field. RF-induced EMFs were identified as the most important potential hazard. We calculated the minimum value of current-limiting resistance to be fitted in each EEG electrode lead for a representative worst case loop, and measured RF magnetic field intensity and heating in a specific type of current-limiting resistors. The results show that electrode resistance should be ≥13 kΩ for our setup. The methodology presented is general and can be useful for other centers.

Recording of EEG during fMRI experiments: Patient safety

PURPOSE: To assess whether a TurboFLASH (fast low-angle shot) magnetic resonance (MR) sequence can improve the accuracy of fast spin-echo (SE) endorectal coil MR imaging in the staging and localization of prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 57 patients with prostate cancer, MR imaging was performed with the following sequences: T1-weighted SE, T2-weighted fast SE, single-section gadolinium-enhanced dynamic subtracted TurboFLASH (one image every 1.25 or 2.5 seconds), and late-phase gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted SE. Retrospectively, two blinded independent readers graded onset and steepest slope of enhancement and assessed tumor involvement and capsular penetration. MR findings were correlated with histopathologic results. Dynamic turboFLASH subtraction technique for contrast-enhanced MR imaging of the prostate: correlation with histopathologic results

As addressed by the recent Food and Drug Administration Critical Path Initiative, tools are urgently needed to increase the speed, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of drug development for cancer and other diseases. Molecular imaging probes developed based on recent scientific advances have great potential as oncologic drug development tools. Basic science studies using molecular imaging probes can help to identify and characterize disease-specific targets for oncologic drug therapy. Imaging end points, based on these disease-specific biomarkers, hold great promise to better define, stratify, and enrich study groups and to provide direct biological measures of response. Imaging-based biomarkers also have promise for speeding drug evaluation by supplementing or replacing preclinical and clinical pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic evaluations, including target interaction and modulation. Such analyses may be particularly valuable in early comparative studies among candidates designed to interact with the same molecular target. Finally, as response biomarkers, imaging end points that characterize tumor vitality, growth, or apoptosis can also serve as early surrogates of therapy success. This article outlines the scientific basis of oncology imaging probes and presents examples of probes that could facilitate progress. The current regulatory opportunities for new and existing probe development and testing are also reviewed, with a focus on recent Food and Drug Administration guidance to facilitate early clinical development of promising probes.
