Conditional moment closure for turbulent combustion

A formulation of the approximate deconvolution model (ADM) for the large-eddy simulation (LES) of compressible flows in complex geometries is detailed. The model is applied to supersonic compression ramp flow where shock-turbulence interaction occurs. With the ADM approach an approximation to the unfiltered solution is obtained from the filtered solution by a series expansion involving repeated filtering. Given a sufficiently good approximation of the unfiltered solution at a time instant, the flux terms of the underlying filtered transport equations can be computed directly, avoiding the need to explicitly compute subgrid-scale closures. The effect of nonrepresented scales is modeled by a relaxation regularization involving a secondary filter operation and a dynamically estimated relaxation parameter. An adaptive local deconvolution method for implicit LES

Phytoplankton physiology is dynamic and highly responsive to the environment. Phytoplankton acclimate to changing environmental conditions by a complex reallocation of carbon and energy through metabolic pathways to optimize growth. Considering the tremendous diversity of phytoplankton, it is not surprising that different phytoplankton taxa use different strategies to partition carbon and energy resources. It has therefore been satisfying to discover that general principles of energetic stoichiometry appear to govern these complex processes and can be broadly applied to interpret phytoplankton distributions, productivity, and food web dynamics. The expectation of future changes in aquatic environments brought on by climate change warrants gathering knowledge about underlying patterns of photosynthetic energy allocation and their impacts on community structure and ecosystem productivity.

Phytoplankton strategies for photosynthetic energy allocation.

Tethered balloon–borne measurements with a resolution in the order of 10 cm in a cloudy boundary layer are presented. Two examples sampled under different conditions concerning the clouds' stage of life are discussed. The hypothesis tested here is that basic ideas of classical turbulence theory in boundary layer clouds are valid even to the decimeter scale. Power spectral densities S( f ) of air temperature, liquid water content, and wind velocity components show an inertial subrange behavior down to ≈20 cm. The mean energy dissipation rates are ∼10−3 m2 s−3 for both datasets. Estimated Taylor Reynolds numbers (Reλ) are ∼104, which indicates the turbulence is fully developed. The ratios between longitudinal and transversal S( f ) converge to a value close to 4/3, which is predicted by classical turbulence theory for local isotropic conditions. Observations of Small-Scale Turbulence and Energy Dissipation Rates in the Cloudy Boundary Layer

The properties of homogeneous isotropic turbulence is investigated, and the authors consider the influence of a magnetic field on those properties in a conducting fluid. The authors discuss the physical mechanism underlying the decay of fluctuation energy in the k-locality interval.
