LTE Release 8 is one of the primary broadband technologies based on OFDM, which is currently being commercialized. LTE Release 8, which is mainly deployed in a macro/microcell layout, provides improved system capacity and coverage, high peak data rates, low latency, reduced operating costs, multi-antenna support, flexible bandwidth operation and seamless integration with existing systems. LTE-Advanced (also known as LTE Release 10) significantly enhances the existing LTE Release 8 and supports much higher peak rates, higher throughput and coverage, and lower latencies, resulting in a better user experience. Additionally, LTE Release 10 will support heterogeneous deployments where low-power nodes comprising picocells, femtocells, relays, remote radio heads, and so on are placed in a macrocell layout. The LTE-Advanced features enable one to meet or exceed IMT-Advanced requirements. It may also be noted that LTE Release 9 provides some minor enhancement to LTE Release 8 with respect to the air interface, and includes features like dual-layer beamforming and time-difference- of-arrival-based location techniques. In this article an overview of the techniques being considered for LTE Release 10 (aka LTEAdvanced) is discussed. This includes bandwidth extension via carrier aggregation to support deployment bandwidths up to 100 MHz, downlink spatial multiplexing including single-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output transmission and coordinated multi point transmission, uplink spatial multiplexing including extension to four-layer MIMO, and heterogeneous networks with emphasis on Type 1 and Type 2 relays. Finally, the performance of LTEAdvanced using IMT-A scenarios is presented and compared against IMT-A targets for full buffer and bursty traffic model.

LTE-advanced: next-generation wireless broadband technology [Invited Paper]

Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-Advanced) provides considerably higher data rates than even early releases of LTE. One key enhancement feature is bandwidth extension by the use of multicarrier technology to support deployment bandwidth up to 100 MHz. In order to achieve up to 1 Gb/s peak data rate in IMT-Advanced mobile systems, carrier aggregation technology is introduced by the 3GPP to support very-high-data-rate transmissions over wide frequency bandwidths (e.g., up to 100 MHz) in its new LTE-Advanced standards. The carrier aggregation (CA) technology allows scalable expansion of effective bandwidth provided to a user terminal through simultaneous utilization of radio resources across multiple carriers. The CA in LTE-Advanced is designed to support aggregation of a variety of different arrangements of component carriers (CCs), including CCs of the same or different bandwidths, contiguous or non- contiguous CCs in the same frequency band, and CCs in different frequency bands. The CA is supported by both formats of LTE, specifically the frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) variants. This guarantees that both FDD LTE and TDD LTE are able to meet the high data throughput requirements placed upon them. This paper provides an outline of carrier aggregation including aggregation structure, deployment scenarios, implementation, main design features and backward compatibility with legacy LTE systems.

Carrier aggregation in Long Term Evolution-Advanced

Similar to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing receiver, the frequency-domain (FD) channel estimation (CE) and equalization are indispensable parts in the coherent single carrier frequency division multiplexing (SC-FDM) receiver. When the channel varies slowly, the FD processing is cost effective. For the applications with high mobility, the traditional implementation of the SC-FDM receiver causes significant performance degradation. In this paper, we propose to estimate time-varying pieces of channel taps for pilot symbols based on basis expansion model (BEM), and subsequently to reconstruct time-domain (TD) channel response for data symbols by utilizing the Slepian sequences-based piece-wise interpolation. Furthermore, two simplified schemes, i.e., the Slepian sequences-based multiple-point interpolation and the segmented BEM, are developed to reduce the computational complexity of the TD-CE. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of channel impulse response (CIR) estimation is also analyzed. In the light of the sparsity of TD channel gain matrix, we design an iterative least-squares QR decomposition algorithm to equalize the SC-FDM symbols. In the simulated SC-FDM system, when considering the carrier frequency of 5.9 GHz and the velocity of about 510 km/h, we observe that the traditional FD methods cause the demodulation failure, while the proposed TD processing schemes achieve ideal error-probability performance and preserve a relatively low complexity.

A Time-Domain Approach to Channel Estimation and Equalization for the SC-FDM System

Simulations of the physical layer of LTE transceiver are
obtained with the use of LTE System Toolbox by Mathworks.
Simulation results are presented to show the performance of
LTE transceivers in Physical Downlink Shared Channel
(PDSCH) and Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH).
Measurements of throughput and Bit Error Rate (BER) are
obtained for different simulation configurations.

Analysis and Simulation of LTE Downlink andUplink Transceiver

An advanced receiver scheme for long-term evolution (LTE) uplink is proposed. The scheme combines semiblind channel estimation and turbo equalization and is based on an approximate expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. The receiver iterates between demodulation of the data symbols using frequency-domain soft interference cancelation, turbo decoding, and semiblind channel estimation that utilizes the soft symbols extracted from the turbo decoder output. It is shown that, using the proposed scheme, one can replace most of the dedicated pilots used in the current LTE scheme with data information and obtain significantly better performance with the same bandwidth. Moreover, an efficient implementation of the proposed algorithm utilizing the discrete/fast Fourier transform (DFT/FFT) properties used in the single-carrier orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (SC-OFDM) scheme is presented.

Semiblind Turbo Equalization Scheme for LTE Uplink Receiver

The performance of the uplink physical channel of the 3GPP LTE system is considered in this paper. Assuming a single user spatial division multiple access transmission scheme, where users' signals are transmitted over different subcarriers, a low complexity channel estimation technique is proposed for the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH). The proposed channel estimation technique is shown to have significant gains in performance compared to other well known channel estimation techniques such as the maximum-likelihood (ML) and the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) channel estimation methods [5]. Simulation results for different channel models and modulation and coding schemes (MCS) using incremental redundancy (IR) based hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) operation are also shown. Finally, a robust detection scheme is proposed for the physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) and simulation results are summarized.
