A ceramic fuel cell in an all solid-state energy conversion device that produces electricity by electrochemically combining fuel and oxidant gases across an ionic conducting oxide. Current ceramic fuel cells use an oxygen-ion conductor or a proton conductor as the electrolyte and operate at high temperatures (>600°C). Ceramic fuel cells, commonly referred to as solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), are presently under development for a variety of power generation applications. This paper reviews the science and technology of ceramic fuel cells and discusses the critical issues posed by the development of this type of fuel cell. The emphasis is given to the discussion of component materials (especially, ZrO2 electrolyte, nickel/ZrO2 cermet anode, LaMnO3 cathode, and LaCrO3 interconnect), gas reactions at the electrodes, stack designs, and processing techniques used in the fabrication of required ceramic structures.

Ceramic Fuel Cells

The manganese oxides of general formula RE1−xMxMnO3 (RE = rare earth, M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) have remarkable interrelated structural, magnetic and transport properties induced by the mixed valence (3+–4+) of the Mn ions. In particular, they exhibit very large negative magnetoresistance, called colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), in the vicinity of metal–insulator transition for certain compositions. In this review paper, we summarize the most important features of the physics of the CMR manganites. The growth techniques for manganese oxide thin films, which are the basic material for potential applications, are reviewed and their structure and morphology examined in relation to growth parameters. The effects of epitaxial strains on the physical properties are discussed. Early works on superlattices and devices are presented.

CMR manganites: physics, thin films and devices

The high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is the most efficient and environmentally friendly energy conversion technology to generate electricity from fuels such as hydrogen and natural gas as compared to the traditional thermal power generation plants. In the last 20–30 years, there has been significant progress in the materials development and stack technologies in SOFC. Among the electrode materials, lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) perovskites, till today, are the most investigated and probably the most important electrode materials in SOFCs. The objective of this article is to review and update the development, understanding, and achievements of the LSM-based materials in SOFC. The structure, nonstoichiometry, defect model, and in particular the relation between the microstructure, their properties (electrical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and interfacial), and electrochemical performance and performance stability are critically reviewed. Finally, challenges and prospects of LSM-based materials as cathodes for intermediate and low-temperature SOFCs are discussed.

Development of lanthanum strontium manganite perovskite cathode materials of solid oxide fuel cells: a review

Perovskite type La1 − xSrxMnO3 (x = 0–0.5) oxides were prepared by the amorphous citrate process, characterised by X-ray diffraction, oxygen desorption, temperature-programmed reduction, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques, and tested for methane combustion within the 473–1073 K temperature range. Since catalyst activity was found to depend strongly on BET areas and to a lesser extent, on the degree of substitution (x), intrinsic activities were computed for La1 − xSrxMnO3 catalyst series. Among the compositions investigated, the degree of substitution x = 0.2 showed the highest intrinsic activity within the temperatures explored. Characterisation techniques made possible to correlate catalytic performance with the structural characteristics of the oxides. The stability of Mn4+ is probably the most important parameter, but excess of oxygen and atomic surface composition should also be taken into account.
