The removal of heavy metal from the environment, especially wastewater, is now shifting from the use of conventional methods to the use of biosorption, which may be defined as the binding and concentration of selected heavy metal ions or other molecules on to certain biological material. Although most biosorption research concerns metal and related pollutants, including radionuclides, the term is now applied for particulates and all manner of organic pollutants as well. Such pollutants can be in gaseous, soluble and insoluble forms. Biosorption is a physical process carried out through mechanisms such as ion exchange, surface complexation and precipitation. It is a property of both living and dead organisms (and their components) and has been heralded as a promising biotechnology for pollutant removal from solution. Fungal biosorption – an alternative to meet the challenges of heavy metal pollution in aqueous solutions

Heavy metals occur in immobilized form in sediments and as ores in nature. However due to various human activities like ore mining and industrial processes the natural biogeochemical cycles are disrupted causing increased deposition of heavy metals in terrestrial and aquatic environment. Release of these pollutants without proper treatment poses a significant threat to both environment and public health, as they are non biodegradable and persistent. Through a process of biomagnification, they further accumulate in food chains. Thus their treatment becomes inevitable and in this endeavor, biosorption seems to be a promising alternative for treating metal contaminated waters. This technology employs various types of biomass as source to trap heavy metals in contaminated waters. The biosorbent is prepared by subjecting biomass to various processes like pretreatment, granulation and immobilization, finally resulting in metal entrapped in bead like structures. These beads are stripped of metal ions by desorption which can be recycled and reused for subsequent cycles. This technology out- performs its predecessors not only due to its cost effectiveness but also in being ecofriendly i.e., where other alternatives fail.

Biosorption: An Eco-Friendly Alternative for Heavy Metal Removal

Saw dust and neem bark as low-cost natural biosorbent for adsorptive removal of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions

Sorption experiments using the Aspergillus niger fungus for cadmium removal were carried out to study the factors influencing and optimizing the biosorption of this metal. The effects of pH, time, biomass concentration, and initial concentration of the heavy metal on the rate of metallic biosorption were examined. An experimental design was also used to determine the values of the under study variables that provided the greatest biosorption efficiency. A technique for biomass recovery was also developed with the objective of determining the capacity of the regenerated biomass to biosorb the metals in solution. This research proved that with a pH of 4.75, a biomass concentration of 0.7 g/L, and a heavy metal concentration varying between 5 and 10 mg/L a biosorption process of biosorption with Aspergillus niger could be successfully used for heavy metal removal from oil field water in the oil industry.

Biosorption of cadmium using the fungus Aspergillus niger

Oil and derivatives leaks are growing concerns worldwide, as they harm the environment, the socio-economic sector, and human beings. Therefore, alternative, and sustainable ways, such as bioadsorption with vegetable fibers, have been studied to clean these oils and derivatives effectively and non-aggressively. In this work, a patent prospection was carried out in the Espacenet® database and the National Institute of Industrial Property - (INPI). The evolution, origin, and applications were analyzed, and the most used fibers in the patents were found. As a result, the first patent was filed in 1999, and the countries that filed the most patents were Japan (45%), Brazil (28%), and China (25%). It is also seen that the most used fibers are cotton and coconut due to their wide availability around the world. Therefore, the development of technologies that use vegetable fibers to clean spilled oil and derivatives has excellent potential since they are environmentally and economically favorable.
