3GPP has completed a study on coordinated multipoint transmission and reception techniques to facilitate cooperative communications across multiple transmission and reception points (e.g., cells) for the LTE-Advanced system. In CoMP operation, multiple points coordinate with each other in such a way that the transmission signals from/to other points do not incur serious interference or even can be exploited as a meaningful signal. The goal of the study is to evaluate the potential performance benefits of CoMP techniques and the implementation aspects including the complexity of the standards support for CoMP. This article discusses some of the deployment scenarios in which CoMP techniques will likely be most beneficial and provides an overview of CoMP schemes that might be supported in LTE-Advanced given the modern silicon/DSP technologies and backhaul designs available today. In addition, practical implementation and operational challenges are discussed. We also assess the performance benefits of CoMP in these deployment scenarios with traffic varying from low to high load.

It is based on distributed caching of the content in femtobasestations with small or non-existing backhaul capacity but with considerable storage space, called helper nodes. We also consider using the wireless terminals themselves as caching helpers, which can distribute video through device-todevice communications. This approach allows an improvement in the video throughput without deployment of any additional infrastructure. The new architecture can improve video throughput by one to two orders-of-magnitude.

Femtocaching and Device-to-Device Collaboration: A New Architecture for Wireless Video Distribution

The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are envisioned to support the deluge of data traffic with reduced energy consumption and improved quality of service (QoS) provision. To this end, key enabling technologies, such as heterogeneous networks (HetNets), massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and millimeter wave (mmWave) techniques, have been identified to bring 5G to fruition. Regardless of the technology adopted, a user association mechanism is needed to determine whether a user is associated with a particular base station (BS) before data transmission commences. User association plays a pivotal role in enhancing the load balancing, the spectrum efficiency, and the energy efficiency of networks. The emerging 5G networks introduce numerous challenges and opportunities for the design of sophisticated user association mechanisms. Hence, substantial research efforts are dedicated to the issues of user association in HetNets, massive MIMO networks, mmWave networks, and energy harvesting networks. We introduce a taxonomy as a framework for systematically studying the existing user association algorithms. Based on the proposed taxonomy, we then proceed to present an extensive overview of the state-of-the-art in user association algorithms conceived for HetNets, massive MIMO, mmWave, and energy harvesting networks. Finally, we summarize the challenges as well as opportunities of user association in 5G and provide design guidelines and potential solutions for sophisticated user association mechanisms.

User Association in 5G Networks: A Survey and an Outlook

The deployment of femtocells in a macrocell network is an economical and effective way to increase network capacity and coverage. Nevertheless, such deployment is challenging due to the presence of inter-tier and intra-tier interference, and the ad hoc operation of femtocells. Motivated by the flexible subchannel allocation capability of OFDMA, we investigate the effect of spectrum allocation in two-tier networks, where the macrocells employ closed access policy and the femtocells can operate in either open or closed access. By introducing a tractable model, we derive the success probability for each tier under different spectrum allocation and femtocell access policies. In particular, we consider joint subchannel allocation, in which the whole spectrum is shared by both tiers, as well as disjoint subchannel allocation, whereby disjoint sets of subchannels are assigned to both tiers. We formulate the throughput maximization problem subject to quality of service constraints in terms of success probabilities and per-tier minimum rates, and provide insights into the optimal spectrum allocation. Our results indicate that with closed access femtocells, the optimized joint and disjoint subchannel allocations provide the highest throughput among all schemes in sparse and dense femtocell networks, respectively. With open access femtocells, the optimized joint subchannel allocation provides the highest possible throughput for all femtocell densities.

Throughput Optimization, Spectrum Allocation, and Access Control in Two-Tier Femtocell Networks

Embedding pico/femto base-stations and relay nodes in a macro-cellular network is a promising method for achieving substantial gains in coverage and capacity compared to macro-only networks. These new types of base-stations can operate on the same wireless channel as the macro-cellular network, providing higher spatial reuse via cell splitting. However, these base-stations are deployed in an unplanned manner, can have very different transmit powers, and may not have traffic aggregation among many users. This could potentially result in much higher interference magnitude and variability. Hence, such deployments require the use of innovative cell association and inter-cell interference coordination techniques in order to realize the promised capacity and coverage gains. In this paper, we describe new paradigms for design and operation of such heterogeneous cellular networks. Specifically, we focus on cell splitting, range expansion, semi-static resource negotiation on third-party backhaul connections, and fast dynamic interference management for QoS via over-the-air signaling. Notably, our methodologies and algorithms are simple, lightweight, and incur extremely low overhead. Numerical studies show that they provide large gains over currently used methods for cellular networks.

Cell Association and Interference Coordination in Heterogeneous LTE-A Cellular Networks

Theoretically, MIMO offers significant capacity benefits, but realizing these gains in deployed wireless systems remains a very challenging problem. MIMO has been used in wireless LAN systems with great success. However, due to the hugely varying spatial profiles and velocity patterns of the access terminals, integrating MIMO techniques in a wireless WAN system has been a difficult design problem. This paper introduces the design paradigms of ultra-mobile broadband, which is poised to become the successor of EVDO as the next generation of high speed wireless system. UMB allows the use of MIMO in various forms to suit the deployment scenario, and elicit as much gain as possible.
