A framework for the analysis and control of manipulator systems with respect to the dynamic behavior of their end-effectors is developed. First, issues related to the description of end-effector tasks that involve constrained motion and active force control are discussed. The fundamentals of the operational space formulation are then presented, and the unified approach for motion and force control is developed. The extension of this formulation to redundant manipulator systems is also presented, constructing the end-effector equations of motion and describing their behavior with respect to joint forces. These results are used in the development of a new and systematic approach for dealing with the problems arising at kinematic singularities. At a singular configuration, the manipulator is treated as a mechanism that is redundant with respect to the motion of the end-effector in the subspace of operational space orthogonal to the singular direction.

A unified approach for motion and force control of robot manipulators: The operational space formulation

The vast majority of work to date concerned with obstacle avoidance for manipulators has dealt with task descriptions in the form ofpick-and-place movements. The added flexibil ity in motion control for manipulators possessing redundant degrees offreedom permits the consideration of obstacle avoidance in the context of a specified end-effector trajectory as the task description. Such a task definition is a more accurate model for such tasks as spray painting or arc weld ing. The approach presented here is to determine the re quired joint angle rates for the manipulator under the con straints of multiple goals, the primary goal described by the specified end-effector trajectory and secondary goals describ ing the obstacle avoidance criteria. Obstacle Avoidance for Kinematically Redundant Manipulators in Dynamically Varying Environments

Kinematically redundant manipulators have a number of potential advantages over current manipulator designs. For this type of arm, velocity control through pseudoinverses is suggested. Questions associated with pseudoinverse control are examined in detail and show that in some cases this control leads to undesired arm configurations. A method for distributing joint angles of a redundant arm in a good approximation to a true minimax criterion is described. In addition several numerical considerations are discussed.

Review of pseudoinverse control for use with kinematically redundant manipulators

Inverse kinematic solutions are used in manipulator controllers to determine corrective joint motions for errors in end-effector position and orientation. Previous formulations of these solutions, based on the Jacobian matrix, are inefficient and fail near kinematic singularities. Vector formulations of inverse kinematic problems are developed that lead to efficient computer algorithms. To overcome the difficulties encountered near kinematic singularities, the exact inverse problem is reformulated as a damped least-squares problem, which balances the error in the solution against the size of the solution. This yields useful results for all manipulator configurations.

Manipulator Inverse Kinematic Solutions Based on Vector Formulations and Damped Least-Squares Methods

Methods for resolving kinematic redundancies of manipulators by the effect on joint torque are examined. When the generalized inverse is formulated in terms of accelerations and incorporated into the dynamics, the effect of redundancy resolution on joint torque can be directly reflected. One method chooses the joint acceleration null-space vector to minimize joint torque in a least squares sense; when the least squares is weighted by allowable torque range, the joint torques tend to be kept within their limits. Contrasting methods employing only the pseudoinverse with and without weighting by the inertia matrix are presented. The results show an unexpected stability problem during long trajectories for the null-space methods and for the inertia-weighted pseudoinverse method, but more seldom for the unweighted pseudoinverse method. Evidently, a whiplash action develops over time that thrusts the endpoint off the intended path, and extremely high torques are required to overcome these natural movement dynamics.
