Maize is the major food crop in Kenya, where 2.3 million tonnes are produced annually to feed an estimated 28.6 million people (79 kg/person p.a.). Population growth in the country is high (2.9 % p.a.), resulting in increased pressure on arable land and, consequently, increased pest pressure on crops. Stemborers are one of the most important pests of maize. Previous research with artificial infestation established clear links between damage factors and yield losses. These results, however, cannot be extrapolated to estimate crop losses in farmers’ fields under natural infestation. Due to lack of field data, farmers’ (often subjective) estimates of losses under natural infestation and the incidence of infestation were used to estimate maize yield losses for each of Kenya’s major agroecological zones. The yield loss was estimated to be 12.9 %, amounting to 0.39 million tonnes of maize, with an estimated value of US$ 76 million. High-potential areas have relatively low crop loss levels (10–12 %), while the low-potential areas have higher losses (15–21 %). Taking into account the higher yield of the former areas (more than 2.5 t/ha), the loss per hectare is remarkably constant, between 315 and 374 kg/ha, except for the dry mid-altitude zones, where losses total approximately 175 kg/ha. The value of these losses is estimated at US$ 61–75/ha and US$ 34/ha, respectively. Such estimates are useful for setting research and extension priorities.

Maize Yield Losses from Stemborers in Kenya

The spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus, is one of the most important pests of sorghum, and host plant resistance is an important component for the management of this pest. Most of the sorghum hybrids currently under cultivation are based on cytoplasmic male-sterility (CMS). In order to develop a strategy for resistance to stem borer, we studied the traits associated with resistance, and their nature of gene action in F1 hybrids derived from resistant, moderately resistant, and susceptible CMS and restorer lines. The hybrids based on stem borer-resistant, moderately resistant, or susceptible CMS and restorer lines were equally resistant or susceptible as the parents for leaf feeding [Damage rating (DR) 5.8 to 6.6 vs. 5.9 to 6.6], and had significant and decreasing trend in deadheart formation (resistant CMS × resistant restorer lines < moderately resistant CMS × moderately resistant restorer lines < susceptible CMS × susceptible restorer lines), respectively. Proportional contributions of restorer lines were greater than those of the CMS lines for leaf feeding, deadhearts, recovery and overall resistance, stalk length, nodes per plant, stem borer holes per plant, and peduncle tunneling. The general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) estimates suggested that leaf feeding score, number of nodes, overall resistance score, panicle initiation, recovery score, and stalk length (dominance type of gene action) have been found to be associated with resistance to spotted stem borer, governed by additive type of gene action, their correlation and direct effects in the same direction, and explained 65.3% of the variation in deadhearts, and thus could be used as marker traits to select and breed for resistance to C. partellus in sorghum. The parents having significant SCA effects for two or more resistance traits for either or more parents have also been discussed for their use in the stem borer resistance breeding.

Inheritance of resistance to spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus, in sorghum, Sorghum bicolor

The comparative influence of Busseola fusca (Fuller) and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), both as separate and mixed populations, on growth and yield of grain sorghum was investigated in a field experiment, using an artificial infestation in cages. C. partellus was more injurious than B. fusca as indicated by whorl damage, stalk injury and yield loss. In the case of mixed populations, dispersion of larvae and damage were independent of B. fusca numbers. A regression equation, Logit Y = 0.24 + 2.06 logit x, relating visible plant damage to yield loss was determined. Control strategies in the case of mixed stem borer populations should be directed against C. partellus.

The effects of cuitivar, time and amount of Chilo partellus Swinhoe infestation on sorghum yield components were investigated. Damage to plants was greater on young plants with higher levels of infestation. Secondary tiller production was influenced by damage to primary tillers, which was related to the time and amount of infestation. The time of infestation was critical for panicle production and young plants in the vegetative phases were the most affected. The total grain yields were reduced in the infested plants and the extent was dependent on the cuitivar, time and level of infestation. Plants with more infestation at the young stages of growth showed the most yield reduction, which was caused by reduced numbers and weights of primary tillers and by the secondary tillers produced being less effective. The implications of these findings for the management of the pest are discussed.
